Very slow connection - What steps should I take?

      Hi,
I have recently signed up with Sky Broadband on their 8MB Mid Connect package. My exchange is an old one that is still OFFNET or something like that.

They said that I should be getting about 6.5MB connection after doing a line test but in reality I am getting about 1.5MB connection - if that!!

When I download large files from fast test servers, I am getting around 80-100kbps download speed :-(

So what can I do to help speed this up? I am also using a brand new Dell Studio laptop that uses an Intel 5100 802.11n wireless card - I have changed the channel on this and on the Sky Sagem router to 11 as I was getting connection issues beforehand.

Are there any things I can change with the router and wi-fi card settings? Or is this purely soemthing to do with Sky/BT?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

      Thanks :-)

Try this, it is a BT speed tester for the connect package that you are on and will tell you your profile settings etc.

      BT speedtester.
      Test Result

      Hope this helps.

Re: Very slow connection - What steps should I take?

if you have done all the checks that are on the sky help site then you will have to go back to sky.I had same problem went down the phone route .Then fitted an I-PLATE .Next step was to use the Sky E-mail help service result. The problem was my service had not been set up correctly from the start . I have gone from 0.35 MB/S to 3.8 MB/S which considering my exchange is only rated at 2 MB/s is not bad hope this helps

Although I have no information to help you, I'd consider yourself one of the lucky one's. I have the mid package and only get 55kb/s tops. On speedtest I get 0.45 download and 0.35 upload. It's pretty ridiculous..

You should start your own thread in the Help section and include your stats from your normal position and the Test socket, link below.

@OP Check the Broadband details section in your MySky page, this will show what package you are on and your estimated speed. Post stats as requested.

Should I be running the tests using a wired or wireless connection?
I've been running them with a wired connection up until now.

I'll post back router stats along with test results using the normal BT socket and the Test socket.

For taking stats it does not matter whether you are wired or wireless. Speetests should always be wired until you establish your best speed, then you can try wireless.
