      Sagem F@ST 2504 - v poor wireless connectivity

My SKY broadband a/c is barely 24 hours old. The most irritating issue is the wireless connection between my wife's laptop and the SAGEM F@ST 2504 router. Positioned barely 12 feet from the router but in another room, signal strength varies curiously. Best is Good, worst is "cannot connect". If I lift the laptop into the same room signal strength is Excellent and connection solid.

I removed a perfectly good Belkin router of my own and which has given not a moments trouble serving the laptop described and in its native location in the other room. Is there any reason why I cannot remove the SAGEM and replace it with my old, far superior wireless router made by Belkin? The SAGEM doesn't even have an external aerial!!!

As this seems to be a common problem with SKY wireless routers I am surprised that SKY do nothing about replacing their standard router with a good one. Don't suppose there is any way of fitting a booster to the laptop?

You could always connect the Belkin to the Sky router via ethernet and then just use the Belkin as a wireless access point. This will not require you to break any of Skys T&C's.

Yes, I have already come across that but it is of course not a Sagem. Now I know that the principles are the same and I have already tried changin the radio channel from AUTO (which had us on 1) to channel 2 which has connected showing a good signal strength. V early days so I'll plod on - have already backed up the original settings so I have a lifeboat if I needed it. I really must congratulate SKY User on its tutorials. I was going up the wall trying to set up my email in Windows (awful) Vista Mail client. Then I found your tutorial. Followed it to the letter and izzy-whizzy Vista Mail working fine. Thanks!

That's really very interesting. I hadn't a clue that you could do that. If I don't get on top of the problem by raising the height of the modem and messaing about with different radio channels. I can always fall back on that solution. Much cheaper than buying a pair of Homeboxes.

I always start high with channel numbers, 9 out of 10 times these issues are just down to the proliferation of wireless devices out in the wild these days and a channel change sorts them.
