      Your welcome by the way
i do want help - specifically help on resolving the issue i have. i'm not asking for networking alternatives.

you're not offering it though. you are pushing homeplugs or ethernet and saying that wifi is a flawed technology. some might think you actually work for a homeplug company or something the way you have gone on in this thread (and others apparently).

as i said, if you can offer help on the specific issue i have then feel free.
if all you want to do is go on about homeplugs then you're preaching to the wrong person.

Chenks - Wireless (most ) operate on a similar frequency to that produced inside a microwave, so yes, it will play merry hell with your connection - Changing channels prob won't help, as the spread between ch1 & ch13 isn't that much.

I too have noticed a liking for homeplugs btw on here lol... I have a set, but nothing beats "No Wires!"

MW's use the 2.45ghz band, so swapping to a much lower channel such as 1/2 (2.41-something-ghz) may alleviate the problem?

But, in fairness, MW's shouldn't be leaking out of the oven!

      Re: microwave kills wifi performance

if i remember correctly, the reason i set it to channel 13 originally was due to numerous other wifi networks in close vicinity all using the same default channel (which was 6 i think).

i'll try it on 1 or 2 and see how it goes.

the microwave and router are not even that close to each other (but it is a 1000w microwave so don't know if that makes a difference or not).

Get Network Stumbler ( Downloads | NetStumbler.com ) and this'll help you avoid used frequencies; unless your wireless config utility does this for you? Windows doesn't, or at least mine doesn't, but that could be because I'm useless at that sort of thing

      Based on:
      ADSL2+
33-34.5dB Line Attenuation (2224m of line to the exchange)
      8-9dB SNR Margin
And many helpful people at Sky's Tech Centre!

      Re: microwave kills wifi performance

Microwaves are supposed to be shielded to prevent the harmful microwaves from leaving the interior of the oven. I'd be more concerned about internal organs getting fried than what its doing to my wireless reception. Then again I dont use wireless poo............. Maybe I should turn it on to check the microwave seals

      Re: microwave kills wifi performance

Even our brand new Panasonic microwave knocked out the wi-fi and the video sender (when I was still using wi-fi) it just kicks off on all frequencies like a giant EM making machine.

The reason why I suggest homeplugs is that ethernet is still miles better than wireless and in a heavily congested area such as my road I was lucky to even get dial up speeds off the laptop.

So unless wireless undergoes a radical performance jump I shall still be sticking with ethernet around the house.
I'm a PC, and Windows 7 Backup saved my sanity when BitDefender imploded !!!

I think most people would agree with you Adrian. My daughter uses the wireless for her lappy as all she does is msn etc. This has got me thinking and I will be doing some experiments tomorrow with her laptop and the microwave to see if hers is effected.
