      Question Netgear V2 router, resets password, settings and constant drop outs!

      Hello,

      Wondering if anyone could help me!

      I have a V2 Sky router and for the past 2 weeks has been dropping connection at least 8 times a night!

      I went to log in the router, using the name and password I made (Changed from the default!) and it wouldn't let me in, I tried the default and it let me in!

      I checked the changes I had made to the settings PNP off etc and it had all turned back to the "factory" settings!

      Is my router faulty?!

      If you can try plugging it into the test socket for a few hours to see if it is stable in there.

      Can you see the router logs, if so what reason does it give.

      It sounds like a faulty router to me though the it is worth trying the above.

      Just checked the logs and it mentions a Router start up?! I've not turned it off in ages and I only rebooted it last week to see if it was just a niggle with sync-ing or something!

      I've just changed the microfilter, to see if it's that, will try the test socket next!

      Right just had it in the test socket and it went down yet again!

      Notice the NM! It went to 5 from 7, then, 6, 5, 3 and the massive long lot, then bam!

      Line issue?!

      In my experience it is not the line but a faulty router. I too have the V2 Netgear and since my old Sagem died and got sent this router I have had problems. The noise margin at night as you say goes crazy, down to 0db sometimes one second then 6db the next. I have had dropped connections and the normal connection of 5.6mb dropped to 4.6 if I was lucky. I took the lid off the router and the circuit board looked homemade and was covered in white powder! I cleaned it up but the router still is all over the place. If I use my old DG834GT the NM is a constant 7db.

      I got onto support and a new router is on the way. After reading on here it seems a fairly common complaint.

      29/10/09 New router arrived, also a Netgear 934 but this one shows both attenuation and SNR correctly.

      Sorry to bump this up, but I am getting issues again! Thought it would be best to carry on this tread and not start a new one!

      I'm having drop-out's yet again, It stopped playing up a few days after this thread was started, but seems to be back!

      Rang Sky CST yesterday and did the usual, test socket etc, still no joy, it stayed connected for 6 hours, then stared to drop-out every 15-20 mins again! Also, my speed dropped, previously, I was getting 16381kbps and now as you can see from the screenie, I am getting 15odd, and my upload has been capped too!

      So I rang them again today, got put through to Tier 2 and then put through to Tier 3. Who then said, my line had been taken over?! What seems to have happened is, we have changed our number when we went to Sky Talk, but the number wasn't changed for the broadband line. So she has changed the number and took the serial off my router. (anyone know why she asked for this?)

      Still the NM is dropping and I am getting cut outs, but not as bad, but now, it's the upload NM dropping, not the download stream.

      I'm considering taking the ring wire out, this is currently connected (I assume) master box is about 10 years old. Someone told me electrical current runs through the master box, so a bit scared to do it!

      Can anyone shed any light?

      Oh it's just dropped again, so I've added another screenie!

      Take it out, there is no dangerous current in a phone socket. At worst if someone calls when you are in it and you are touching a bare wire, you may get a 'tickle'.

      Your noise margin is plummeting, this is causing the drop outs. Are you with SkyPhone Rental? Many who are find their speed drops.

      Hmmmmm, might do it then! I've been reading about it, and some people who have 4-5db, shot up to 12bd when they took it out!

      Yeah, we do have our line rented from Sky.

      It's been up for 16 hours, but the noise margin is still stuck at 5db and has been since 9pm last night.

      So I'm gonna read up on this bell wire and get it done I think!

      Right I've been reading up on this ring wire stuff, all I have in my house is 1 socket, the master socket and I can actually take the front off the bottom half of my master socket and there are no wires connected to the front plate?

      Does the ring wire only apply to houses with extensions?
