Thumbs up VPN now working after moving from Brand NEW Sagem to Older Netgear!

Just wanted to make everyone who is having problems using VPN with certain types of routers aware, that I may have a solution for some.

I've only had my Sky broadband installed for about a week, however, in that time I have noticed that I can no longer connet to work via VPN. I was previously with BT Total Broadband and no problems with VPN.
Sky delivered one of the Sagem F@ST2504 routers (the one with the dark grey case), after trying a number of suggestions, i.e. opening up port for IPSEC and trying adding my PC as the DMZ IP with no joy, I decided to hit ebay and buy the 2 other types of router. i.e. Netgear DG934G & DG834GT.

After a nifty bit of ebay bidding, I managed to get both of them for about 30 including delivery

The DG934G arrived today and after plugging in and running a VPN connect test..... jobs a good'n. No problems at all connecting.
I'll do the same test when the DG834GT arrives hopefully tommorrow, but in the mean time, here is my current config for anyone who is interested:

Setup: Sagem F@ST2504 Router Firmware Version: 1.9Sky
      Result: No VPN

Setup: Netgear DG934G Router Firmware Version: V2.02.44
      Result: VPN OKAY

      Setup: Netgear DG834GT (awaiting delivery)
      Result: ????

I've read a number of threads on here that the new Sagem firmware apparently fixes a lot of VPN issues, and some people have had some success with Sagems when connecting through VPN, but based on the above findings, its looks like there are still a few more to iron out.

I'm no VPN expert, but it would appear that there are 2 methods VPN can use to connect VPN passthrough and NAT traversal. I assume that depending on the client and server ends, either should work. However, it would appear that the Sagem router currently only supports one and if that one isn't selected, NO VPN

I hope this thread makes sense and helps anyone currently struggling to get their VPN connections working, if anyone needs any more info around the testing and setup I have, please PM me.

Could someone please direct me to the link, I asked a similar question in another post with no response. It would be good to know as then I would at least have a standby router in case this one goes west.

The best bit is that if you have a sagem router with nortel VPN sky will send you out a netgear .

Is this right? Does anyone know how to request this? and does it entail sending my Sagem back?

that's not true in the slightest as no one in Sky can specify which router you get sent...it's hit & miss...

Yes but they will only send a new router if you are on that Nortel vpn ,
They have to pass the info on to a TL for it to be requested .

Re: VPN now working after moving from Brand NEW Sagem to Older Netgear!

2nd Router arrived and good enough, VPN works a treat on that one too

Setup: Netgear DG834GT Firmware Version V2.02.44
      Result: VPN OKAY

Always worth keeping a spare just in case I have a failure.
