Replacing a Sky router to another Sky router

I am on Sky 2MB broadband using a Netgear black coloured router (says version 3 on the original box it came in) . My friend who is going to live abroad has the same Sky router and wants to sell it to me for 10 I am tempted to buy it for a spare to use if mine stops working some time in the future (that way I wont be off line long). I presume I will need the Network key and the SSID number of his router but will I be able to just swap routers over without any problems and will the original password I logged into skybroadband.com still be valid.
Any other information would be very much appreciated

      Thanks

As the username and password are hard coded to each router issued by Sky, you will be logging in with his details. His account will, of course, have been closed so you will not be likely to log in.
You can 'hack' the router to make it into a generic one, but you will still need to find your own username & password!

Re: Replacing a Sky router to another Sky router

I was given a Sky Sagem router by someone leaving Sky. Even a year later the router logs on using the original username and password (I've just tried). I suspect that only occurs if your line is Sky Broadband enabled - you are just signing in with a different authorised set of details. Which seems to indicate Sky don't remove usernames/passwords when people leave the service and rely upon activation of broadband on a line to stop unpaid for use. Maybe someone knows more?

Re: Replacing a Sky router to another Sky router

ANY Sky router can be used on ANY Sky connection...although the router is linked to the owners account, the logins are not...

so long as the router isn't suspended it'll work...

And if anybody uses said router for downloading something illegal (such as child porn) I expect that the account user is liable as well as the offender?
