Exclamation 3Meg/16Meg Speed with Sagem F@ST 1.8 Miles away from exchange

      Hello there,

I have the 16Meg MAX broadband package, but only recieving around 3Meg.

I have the Sagem F@ST 2504 router. Im wondering if the Netgear routers are better? Because i only live 1.8 Miles away from the Exchange so i should be getting full speed!

Is it possible that i could ring up sky and request a netgear router to be sent to me? I have been with sky for around 4-5 Months.

I have seen alot of Sky MAX users using the Netgear Sky router. Im just wondering why ive been given a Sagem router.

After alot of searching, i couldnt find anything about the Sagem F@ST 2504 router being ADSL+2, only the netgear routers are ADSL+2. ADSL (1) is capable of speeds up to 3Meg!
I know you need ADSL+2 for 16Meg, so obviously thats why im not receiving my full 16MegaBit connection, right?

Here is my result from 'SpeedTest.net'

      And my Router Statistics

      Thanks,
      -David

Your downstream attenuation is 55db, running that figure with the ADSL2 speed estimator gives the following result:

      ADSL2+ Speed Test
We estimate your line is capable of between 4mb to 5mb broadband on an ADSL2+ service.

Try plugging your router into the test socket to see if you can squeeze a bit more out of your connection.

      Thanks for the reply penrhyn.

However i redid the adsl+2 speed test and use distance from exchange instead of line attenuation.

      ADSL2+ Speed Test
We estimate your line is capable of between 16mb to 24mb broadband on an ADSL2+ service.

Will it be worth ringing up sky and asking them to send the netgear router?

The line from the exchange from your property to the exchange will not be as the crow flies. The attenuation and the noise margin are the key figures. It won't make any difference to change the modem. In your case an attenuation of 55 db is what you get with 4km or around 2.5 miles of cable.
I've just checked the speed estimator, looks like you have to enter the distance in metres!!
How are you connecting your router at the moment, master socket or extension?

I dont know wether that speed check is in miles or metres, theres no measurement.

Im not sure if im using master socket or extension. I dont know what you mean?
      Could you explain?

      Thanks,
      -David

Re: 3Meg Speed with Sagem F@ST 1.8 Miles away from exchange

The only way to get better speeds is to improve your line quality. By connecting to your test socket you should see a best case senario with all the internal wiring being bypassed, post your stats from here. (have a look at the tutorials section for more info).

Any measurement you get for distance is usually as the crow flies and takes no account of how the cables are ran, remember they usually follow roads and pavements and there is nothing to say that it takes the most direct route to you. Line attenuation is a much better way to establish distance and yours is quite high which means that there is quaite a bit of cable between you and the exchange.

If that shows no improvement the only other option is top move your house closer to the exchange
