Activated today but unhappy with router

As per the title, I got activated today and am generally very pleased.

But, the Netgear DG934G that Sky supplied me with is disappointing; it's just like the old DG834Gv1 I had all those years ago. I did away with Netgear a long time ago and switched to SpeedTouch or 2Wire, which seem to hold a pretty solid SNRM.

Is it AR7-based? The SNRM is all over the place, plunging into minus figures, and is only about 1 or 2dB following a re-sync.

      Is the Sagem any better?

Could you post your stats from the test socket if you have one

Re: Activated today but unhappy with router

Thanks for your reply. Sorry, I should have provided a bit more information.

Firstly, just so you know, I'm pretty clued up when it comes to ADSL, SNRM, target SNRM, etc.

I have an ADSL Nation XTE-2005 so no use connecting to the test socket.

Current stats are (almost immediately after a re-sync):

Connection Speed 5408 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 47 db 13.5 db
Noise Margin 2 db 13 db

All Netgears behave like this in my experience.

Do you have any extension sockets? and if you do, when you remove the SSFP are they dead or do they still have a dial tone?

The extensions are wired properly, i.e. to the faceplate, and not illegally to the back of the NTE5. I wish it was a simple case of eliminating the effects of internal wiring.

Unfortunately, I'm convinced it's just Netgears in general.

Re: Activated today but unhappy with router

I don't think there have been any problems with the Netgear V2, hence my questions, if you have a low SNRM it does look like a wiring/line problem, My Sagem is rock solid, with only a 1.5dB shift in Noise margin over 24 hours, but so has every other router I have had Including Netgears. I don't want to irritate you, but try the test socket, and check the extensions

Re: Activated today but unhappy with router

Sorry if I sound defensive, or like I know it all; it's just that my experience of Netgears has always been the same. I've been on IPStream Max for a few years (before joining Sky today) with a SpeedTouch 585v6 and a 2Wire 2700HGV, and both had a solid SNRM. Before those, I had a DG834G that was all over the place, and I've read the same on many other forums.

Honestly, my wiring is absolutely fine. Has anyone else had a similar experience, and what is the Sagem like? What are my chances of getting Sky to swap it?

No problem here with the DG934G! Works as described on the tin!
I've always found Netgear kit to be solid and reliable! I also have an SC101 and did have a Netgear Print Server/switch for a long while.

      Current Stats.

      Downstream/Upstream
      Connection Speed 6400 kbps/768 kbps
      Line Attenuation 47 db/3 db
      Noise Margin 2 db/14 db

Can't call me a Luddite now!

Re: Activated today but unhappy with router

It's not fair that you get a whole extra 1Mb to when we have the same attenuation.

Could someone clarify something for me? Is the noise margin on Netgears actually a mis-labelled SNRM, or is it actually noise margin?

Re: Activated today but unhappy with router

It is noise margin, as in Signal Noise ratio Margin, the excess bit over and above the required signal noise ratio
