Re: Activated today but unhappy with router

I've been on the phone with Sky for about an hour tonight. The first people you have to talk to are extremely frustrating, but I appreciate that they have to do their bit.

My case was then escalated, and the lady I spoke to was very helpful. She's changed a few settings at the exchange (delays?), but the noise margin is still about the same.

I raised my concerns about Netgear routers on my line, and the lady appreciated what I was saying, especially given my setup (filtered faceplate, etc) and that there were no errors on the line, yet the noise margin is poor even immediately following a re-sync. By the way, isn't the DG934G just a DG834Gv3? In which case, no wonder some people experience problems when it has the dreadful AR7 chipset.

An interesting bit of news for you guys is that the DG934G is getting a firmware update starting today, or so I was told.

I've agreed to see how things go; I'll even wait for the firmware update; but I can't see things changing until they give me a Sagem.

Re: Activated today but unhappy with router

You would expect the noise margin to go up in the day because there is less noise around. The Netgear is unstable at night as it can't seem to sync at the right level to achieve the correct target SNRM (~7dB). It'll sync low (just not low enough) and then things will look good in the day, but tonight, it'll probably be unstable again.

It's the router, without a doubt. I'm not saying everyone is affected, but this has always been my experience of Netgear routers, at least on my line (and it's AR7-based - we all know what that means!).

My sync was maintained over night at around 5.1Mb, but I'd prefer the Sagem.

      @ Sebby.
Have you got your user name and password yet from the password generator and tried a differant router?

I did get my username and password using the generator (where you have to put in the LAN MAC and router serial). The router (2Wire 2700HGV) sync'd at 7dB (and held this figure), but I couldn't establish the PPP session. I don't know why that would be; the settings were definitely correct.

Still, that proved that it's the Netgear that's unstable on my line. Ultimately, I'd prefer to use a Sky router.

Remember when you put in the lan mac it has to be as displayed **:**: etc

Username/Password and these settings are usually all you should require to connect a 3rd party modem router-
      Encapsulation: PPPoA
      VPI:0
      VCI:38
      Multiplexing: VC

It does not matter how you enter them in the generator, it will still work. Even caps are not necessary.

Re: Activated today but unhappy with router

Okay, so I did it correctly. Don't know why it wouldn't work, but like I say, it still sync'd with a solid SNRM and proved the issue is with the Netgear.
