Activated today but unhappy with router

This is a discussion on Activated today but unhappy with router within the Sky Router forums, part of the Sky Broadband help category; So does 2dB, for example, on the Netgear mean it's 2dB above the target SNRM?...

Netgear appear to be like M$ in this respect. There are a lot around who just hate them and others who think they are OK.

There have been a few complaints about certain Netgears not performing well with ADSLMax, but that does not apply to Sky's Max. Although it is against the T & Cs, that is all that is stopping you using the router of your choice, many do.

What is SNRM? Ah Iv'e got it you are referring to the Signal to Noise Ratio Margin. I think the answer is no. The default target NM is 6.9 dbs.

The target SNRM on Sky is around 7dB, as background noise increases this margin decreases, so 2dB is the margin above the min S/N ratio for a stable connection.

I agee with Isitme, get your user name and pass word and try a differant router. If nothing else it may rule out the Netgear, or comfirm your fears

Okay, I'll try and get my username and give it a try later. I'm worried about messing up the training period, though.

There is no training period on Max, Mid, or Base. Only Connect has a training period because it is a BT product.

Okay, great. Sorry, I'm still used to BT's systems, worrying about having my target SNRM increased!

I tend not to attach importance to figures like SNR & HM. The only thing that matters is the bottom line - the speed you get when downloading and whether the connection is stable.
You can fiddle around for hours trying to get the nth degree of a fart more output and for what? Then you find that the means of reporting is faulty and it over/under reads by a chunk!

The bottom line is the ONLY thing that matters!

Agreed, but it's not stable - had 4 or 5 re-syncs in quick succession, yet IPStream Max has been stable for a couple of years. Like I say, I have a filtered faceplate, etc. I'm convinced it's this Netgear. Following a re-sync, shouldn't the SNRM be near enough the target (6.9dB)?

Re: Activated today but unhappy with router

Since joining this thread I've checked my stats a few times. Although my speed has dropped slightly, the SNR remains the same. But, I see that I've only been connected a couple of minutes.
Maybe I suffer reconnects like you but just never notice?

It looks like it. To me, that's not normal or acceptable. Anyway, thanks for your help, guys. I'm going to see if Sky'll give me a Sagem instead. I'll be in touch.
