      Unhappy Router/internet problems, help!

I changed from Ntl quite a while back, as soon as they changed to Virgin and decided to cut our channels (I can't really remember when that was). Ever since changing we've been experiencing problems with our phone line and broadband. We got the whole package - TV, Internet and Phone - with Sky. We've found that whenever the phone rings/we ring out, our internet cuts out and doesn't come back for a while. This has been going on ever since we changed. Now we're experiencing problems with our internet. We have a Netgear V1 DG834GT (the white one) and run on Vista. For a couple of days now, our internet connection does not last for longer than a couple of minutes, and on the router only three lights show. Usually, for the internet to work, four lights show (the 'on' light, 'wireless' light, what looks like an 'i' with a swirl around it, and the port number 1 light). When the internet cuts off, the 'i' light either turns completely off or goes orange.

I've tried everything to sort this out. According to Windows Help it's our firewall, (we have two - Windows Live OneCare and the normal Windows Firewall, but never run both at the same time). I've tried experimenting with the Firewalls - I turn one on, wait and see what happens with the connection. I have found that having no firewall on I get no connection at all and having either one of the firewalls on I get the same orange light problem.

We went through a problem download speeds a while back and were told to get a yellow Ethernet cable, and we're still waiting on that. I wonder if this is the problem?

Can anyone shed some light on what's going on here, or at least tell me they have the same problem?

      Thanks,
      Kat

Have you got filters on all your telephone sockets?

      Sorrrrry, but what's a test socket? (I'm only 17...!)

And, yes we have got filters on all the phones. We've got two phones, but only one goes through the thingy, the other one is a standalone.

      Ohh yeah, thanks!
I'm going to have to ask my mum to do that at some point then...
Could it also be that we have about 15m of cable from our router to the PC?
Usually our wireless connections are fine, but my brother said today he was having trouble with his Xbox connection.

      Re: Router/internet problems, help!

You may have a faulty filter, that seems to give a problem similar to yours when the phone is used.

If the light on the router is turning orange then the problem is that the router cannot talk to the BT exchange, try changing the filter (swap the router one for the other phone one) that may help but you will need to replace it if it turns out to be the problem.

Remember ALL phones need to be connected via a filter and also your Sky box if it is plugged into an extension. It does not matter if it is the only phone plugged into a socket, it must have a filter on it.

Usually with this problem, something is not filtered, or a dodgy extension.

      Re: Router/internet problems, help!

Everythings got filters on it, according to my mum.
I'll get her to look at the little box thingy to do the test.

We used to have a short cable connecting our PC and router, but then we had trouble with our phone connection because our PC is across the room from the phone, so the phone had a long cable to the router, we had interference. We were told to get a long cable and move the router closer to the phone. We've got I think it's either 10 or 15m of cable connecting the router to the PC.
