I'll get her to look at the little box thingy to do the test.

Here is a quick diagram on a basic wiring setup. Yours should be similar to this I would imagine.

Notice how every phone point is filtered.

Haha, I know they can be wrong.
I told her about the test thing, she says she's taken the front off it before and all that happened was that a load of wires fell out!
And, we only have one master socket in use, there's one down here that ahs the phone and router plugged in to, the other is in my bedroom which is not in use, hasn't been for several years. I don't even think that one works - we had a new socket fitted when we switched phone companies and that is an old one.

Is the Master socket an NTE5 type with a joint across the face, or is the face all in one piece? If it is the former, removing the front will reveal a socket on the right hand side. This is the test socket, plug into that. (Any extension wires should be attached to the rear of the faceplate.) If it is the latter, you don't actually have a test socket and it is a bit more involved.

The other sockets don't have to be in use to cause a problem, just being connected to the read of the master socket could be enough to ruin a good line.

Get the front off the master socket again, ignore the loose wires, just be careful not to pull it to hard. You should see another socket behind, this is the test socket and with the router in there it will remove any problems with the other wires and show the best connection you can get.

You should try to get a filtered faceplate, they don't cost much and will sort out any internal wiring issues.
