      Long & Weary noob post - sorry!

      Hello, in frustration I turn to the forum for advice,

      I started out on "connect" and I am now on the "mid". I have a DG834GT router with V1.03.87 firmware.

      My stats are:
      Connection Speed
      Downstream 256kbps
      Upstream 64kbps
      Line Attenuation
      Downstream 63.5db
      Upstream 31.5db
      Noise Margin
      Downstream 28.9db
      Upstream 9db

      I initially received download speeds of over 1Mbps, this however was unreliable and prone to drop out. After going through the helpline I was passed to an engineer (tier 2?) who advised me regarding length of line issues. I understand and accept these. My exchange, West Malling, is 3.2km as the crow flies. He "turned down the speed" to increase reliability.
      OK in principle, my download speed is now 256kbps.
      Q1 - Is this capped by Sky
      Q2 - Is this a reasonable download speed for me
      I called the helpline again to see if I could try a higher speed, even 512kbps would make a great difference to me.
      The kind lady in India directed me to Network Utility on my Mac and told me that I had too many sockets open and that this is why I had to accept slow internet. This smells of Bull%*!t to me. I am only using normal Safari and .Mac services, nothing fancy.
      I asked to speak to a tier 2 / supervisor / English speaker - "sorry that isn't possible, he's in a meeting".

      To the knowledgeable members of this forum, am I being fobbed off?
      If so what can I do about it, I'm not averse to fibbing to the helpline if it achieves the desired result of slightly quicker download speeds.

      Your downstream nm suggests you are massively capped.
      Post a full set of router stats using this utility and a better opinion can be given.

      As you are aware you are on the limit for a bb connection but I would have thought you can do better than that. When taking the stats a set from both the master and test sockets would be useful.

      Sorry, further to that, I use the master socket all the time, i.e. the one on the inside of the socket box with the line across the middle.

      So you removed the front of the master and connected to the test socket inside ? Thats good as it rules out any problems with your internal wiring. You have very few errors which is also good. However the high nm needs addressing and the only way to do this is to get onto sky and ask to be put thru to CST. About this time would be good to try as they should be quiet now. Hopefully they can reduce the cap a bit at a time and see how things go, totally removing it may introduce unacceptable error levels, with your theoretical max being 3104 I would have thought they could get you up to around 1500 - 2000 ish. You will just have to persevere on the phone.
