DSL ZoneUK - Improve your speed - Extension wiring and Disconnection help

What's your phone wiring like, master socket and extension wise?

      Hi Nemi01.
      The photo explains everthing.

To see what speed your line can support, you need to do a spot of wiring, I will assume you are happy to do this, and are aware you should not open the master socket as this is against BT's T&C's.

      (1) you need to open the master socket (this is the single socket) and remove the connections to the twin socket. This will leave you with one wire in each of terminals marked "2" and "5" of the master socket.

      (2) Now plug in a filter into the master socket and connect a phone and router and see what you speed is.
The phone connected to the filter is the only one which will work at the moment.

      (3) Your speed should now be much better and in order to reconnect your extensions you really need a NTE-5 master fitted, along with a filter faceplate. But for now you can reconnect the twin socket and plug in your esisting extensions.

An increase in the error rate on your line will cause the niose margin to fall, thus causing it to drop. If these errors are being created by your internal wiring, it is usually easy to fix, not so if it is the external line. This can only be fixed by BT. Try Brian's suggestion above.

Your photos are revealing in another way. If this is your normal setup, you should have filters fitted to all of the sockets. Everything plugged into the phone line must run through a filter.

Aye big time internal connections issue there, as Isitme has pointed out, you have filters missing and I would guess as also pointed out your internal wiring is pants. Sort those two issues out and you may be suprised how your speed increases and how stable your line becomes.

Having had another look at your pictures I have noticed something else and that is the difference in size between what we are assuming is the Master socket and the extension next to it. The 'Master' appears to be much smaller, in fact it looks like a 68mm extension box. Are you positive that it is the Master? Have you traced the line back to where it enters your house? Sometimes the master is placed in the loft, especially in overhead entries, or in a cupboard for low level entries.

I am sure the single is the master, If you look carefully, you can see the BT logo.

I didn't know only masters had the logo. The box next to it must be some size, it does not look like a domestic box. I also notice that they are lying on their sides, which is never a good sign. Could be a Hopalong Cassidy installation.
