      Remote Desktop to home PC

I have just moved from Nildram to Sky broadband and used to remote desktop to my PC away from home.

I have got on to my sky router and have created a firewall rule and service that allows RDP (Port TCP 3389) from any external to 192.168.0.2 (PC) inbound.

However this still doesnt work, simpy times out.

I then did the following tests:-

      1. From my PC, telnetted to 'localhost' on port 3389 and this connected

      2. Ran MSTSC and connected to 'localhost' this worked, however didn't login as was already on that PC

      3. From external PC at work ran telnet [ext ip of router] 3389 and it says can't cannot, port not listening.

      4. From external PC at work ran MSTSC and tried to connect to external IP of routers and got same error as number 3

I know there isn't a restriction at work as I have remoted on to this PC before when on ISL Nildram.

      Any ideas?
Does Sky block this port by default?
If so, can RDP be changed to listen on port 80 or something that is already open?

For the record my router is a Sagem one. Don't know if this is good or bad compared to the netgear ones they also provide.

      Thanks
      Mark

I've got this working fine using the Netgear v1.
It sounds more like a firewall issue.
Check the Sagem's and the Windows one (in case it's reverted since you were on Nildram)

This is what my router is showing under the firewall:-

      Inbound Services:
      ===============

      Filter Name: RDP
      Action: Allow always
      LAN Server IP Address: 192.168.0.2 / 255.255.255.255(3389:3389)
      WAN Users: 0.0.0.0 / 0.0.0.0(1:65535)

I have disabled my Windows Firewall and it still doesn't work from outside of my home.

      Any more ideas?

      Thanks

Re: Remote Desktop to home PC

I think i can help you here... go to www.logmein.com & sign up for the free account & then it will direct you to download there software. When you install it, all you have to do is make sure you select the free version.

Also, you will have to make 2 accounts. 1 for your home pc, one for your away account to use on your travels & invite your away account from your home account & give it full access & so forth.

It works 10x better than xp remote desktop & is only requires you to allow it by your firewall when prompted. Its as simple as that.

They do offer better versions for a fee of course, but the free one basically allows me to do everything i want, even play wow over the RD connection, depending on the internet speed at the time of use..

any probs, just leave us a msg..
