Sagem f@st 2504 and security issues

I have a recently acquired sagem f@st 2504 router from Sky. It looks smart and works fine but I am surprised by its weaknesses. First, as far as I can tell, it is no possible to edit and to change the network key. If someone hacks it, when you are online then there is nothing one can do about it. Secondly, there seems to be no MAC filter (which I think is an invaluable layer of security).
Thirdly, ShieldsUp says that all my ports are stealthed but it can be pinged.
May be I shouldn't be too concerned.
      What think ye?

What makes you think you cannot change the Key?

That is a good question. I have heard that one can change it but using WEP rather than one of the more secure keys (e.g. WAP). In any event, I am not sure how one goes about changing the key using this particular router. In other routers that I have used, I can enter the configuration system of the router and change the keys and use MAC filters. Not so, it seems, with the Sky Sagem router. Furthemore, I have been told that it is contrary to the T&Cs to use a router to access skybroadband other than the one Sky provides.

If the rest of your hardware supports it, there is no reason why you can't use WPA-PSK (Wi-Fi Protected Access Pre-Shared Key) which is available in the Wireless Settings part of the Router Settings. Have never heard of WAP security so I can't comment about why it is not available. MAC filtering is also available in the Wireless settings, there it is known as Station Access list.

Re: Sagem f@st 2504 and security issues

Many thanks Isitme for responding. I notice that you have a Netgear V1 router whereas my is the sagem kit. The difficulty is that I cannot login into the router to alter its configuration settings. If one can, the instruction booklet doesnt tell you and the Sky customer service couldn't help stating that it does not have mac filter settings. That could be misinformation. You may well have wider knowledge than I have about this make of router. Could you let me know what the steps are?
      Many thanks

Hi, I am making progress. Curious that the booklet makes no reference to the login details to alter the settings.

      Hi Isitme,
In fact you are entirely right. Very many thanks. I found the login details to the router on another site. It is curious that the booklet makes no reference to the login details to alter the settings and I am surprised that the helpline (who are also on the frontline of course) didn't point me in the right direction. May be the policy is to keep things basic and thus user friendly in most cases. In fact the configuration menu for the router is very user friendly.

      Glad you are fixed

I am surprised Tier 1 did not know how to log into the router, but not about the MAC filter and encryption, that is beyond most of them.

Yes, I agree. I have also unchecked the ping (which seems to be checked by default for diagnostic reasons). ShieldsUp now confirm that the PC is fully stealthed. Once again many thanks.

Re: Sagem f@st 2504 and security issues

      Hi guys

I'm trying to log into the router settings for the first time, but I'm not sure what the password it. I've tried admin as a few websites suggest, but it isn't working!

Any ideas what it will be? Thanks!
