      Unhappy variable connectivity

      Hi there,

We have a (main) WinXP desktop machine that has been working for a while with Sky in a LAN-connected manner. All of a sudden this does not connect properly. The Systray icons shows that the computer is connected and I can successfully ping the router from the command line, but cannot get 192.168.0.1 on a browser. The same computer connects flawlessly to the net when booted up in Linux from a Live CD, as does my wife's laptop that operates wirelessly, and another old (Linux) PC that can be connected via the LAN.

Presumably, there is something screwed up in the Windows setup on our main PC. Any idea how I should start to depug this?

      Cheers,
      Paul

      Re: variable connectivity

Are you running Zone Alarm? If so a recent MS update prevents connection to the internet. If you are uninstall MS update KB951748 and reboot. Turn off auto updates until a patch is released. THESE Google articles explain further.

Thanks. That could well be it, as I do tend to allow Windows to update itself and we have Zonealarm. I'll test this later tonight and post the results.

Yes. it was the Zone Alarm business. Many thanks for helping to sort this. My kids are happy they can do their homework now!
