New Sky User. Is my speed the norm?

      Hi everyone.

I have just moved from Tiscali (plugh!) to Sky (?????). I was told that my line would only get a max of 5-6mb, so went for the MID package.

I have been online about 5 days now, and the speeds have been extremely variable from 200kb/s all the way up to 3586kb/s tested at various times and different days.

The house I moved into has some dubious wiring and there does not seem to be a master socket(to be honset there is only one socket that had diy extentions out of it).

I am running an HTPC, xbox, and PS3 all Wired, my wifes laptop and the main office PC as wireless)

Now and again I was getting the flashing amber internet light.

      I am 1.51km from exchange.

Anyway these are my stats (I don't know how to get detailed ones)

Thank you whomever looks into this in advance.

for the attenuation it is a bit low but it's more than likely the wiring holding it back - best bet is to invest and get it all re-wired and then get a filtered faceplate etc...

have a look at the cabling/faceplate forum and you'll get some good info

Is this possibly the 10 day training thing? Or was that just for Connect customers?

What was your speed/stability like with Tiscali?

      Thanks for the reply.

I just had a look in the one and only socket, and it looks like the ark inside, a whole lot of dead spiders for one!!

What do you think of the new BT thingy, where you pay I think 90 for a BT engineer to come round and update your wiring for broadband. I think they guarantee a .5 increase or your money back??

Re: New Sky User. Is my speed the norm?

It might be of benefit, I have heard of it but tbh there are enough tips on here to do the same job and it'll be free!!

As for the 10-day training in, this only applies to Sky BB Connect, so don't worry

Click the last link on my sig as this has a picture of the master socket worth getting put it, and I'm sure Brian can advise of a decent setup if you ask in the cabling/faceplate forum...

The new BT "thingy" (I can't remember whats its called) where they visit and offer money back if they do not get an improvment is all very well but.
      (1) They will not work on wiring beyond the demarcation point (NTE master) so will not do anything you cannot do yourself.
      (2) They will not replace an existing master with a NTE master.
I you do not have a NTE master and hence no demarcation point or test socket I doubt they will touch your wiring at all.

IIRC - if they dont improve your speed by 0.5 meg you get your money back.
