new user (activation 26-6-08) & sagem review

Hi all, since i cant afford to pay Zen prices anymore ive moved to sky max. Just wondering if anyone is in the York exchange and could gimme some stats on how well it performs?

Also is it likely I will be getting the Netgear Router or are they only handing out the (URGH) Sagem ones now?

Ive got a Netgear router right now and it works fine, sucks how i have to use thiers!

Current line stats (On Zen 8 Meg)

      ADSL Link------------Downstream ---- Upstream
      Connection Speed----- 7808 kbps ----- 448 kbps
      Line Attenuation------- 44.0 db ------- 27.5 db
      Noise Margin---------- 10.7 db ------- 21.0 db

you'd get about the same upstream, give or take 500kbps...upstream will increase though...

make sure setup is corect your end and you should be fine

aslong as my speeds are as good as they are currently (Zen was really good however i just cant justify paying 25 any more )

Thankfully when i moved in to this house (3 years ago) i invested in a faceplate filter and connect through the master socket so there isnt much i can do to improve my line stats, downstream SNR could be better though :s.

Is there any real disadvantage to having the Sagem router as apposed to the Netgear??

Currently im using a wireless bridge which connects to my router (also a netgear DG834GT) downstairs, two computers hooked up to that and a printer.

Downstairs the XB360 is wired to the router, and i connect with a laptop over Wifi. With a little luck the sky router will handle it ok.

EDIT:: The router just arrived, its the Sagem one. Looks quite fancy but I dunno if its gonna be any good.

Well, just unpacked the sagem router, looks nice.

Pretty much has the same options in the setup (using the router web access, NOT the sky setup CD lol).

I printed off and inputted my LAN IP reservations which have taken no problem and ive connected my bridge wirelessly without ANY issues whatsoever.

Overall based on just the LAN performance im happy so far im going to do a stress test on the wireless side by streaming some videos down to my XB360 and seeing how it performs. I'll add the findings as an edit.

EDIT:: Performance streaming video across wireless to the XB360 (wired to the sky router) is excellent.
Must say I was dubious about a "Sagem" router having dealt with thier set-top boxes before but it is good.

Only thing to test now is performance over broadband but that wont happen for a while so, end of thread lol.

I was dubious about the Sagems as well since I've seen some comments on here about them.

      OK so far.

Only had it turned on for 45 mins so plenty of time for it all to hit the fan!!

Re: new user (activation 26-6-08) & sagem review

Well it was activated today, seems to have moved over smoothly...got home and it was all working

Quick show of the stats im getting:

Connection Speed 7840 kbps down , 768 kbps up
Line Attenuation 44.0 db down , 27.5 db up
Noise Margin 7.9 db down , 14.0 db up

It seems my connection is still around 8Mbit then? Is this something that is likely to change?? Would be great to synch at faster rates, but what can i expect for a tenner!?

with that attenuation you're about as good as it gets...

you are on gdmt so a possible move to adsl2+ might help but tbh I'd stick with what you have. I assume setup your end is as good as it can be?

Yer I aint too sure what i can do but i only have a faceplate, and an extension to the sky+ box. Might remove the sky box and see if theres any difference, which i doubt.

Did i see somewhere that the ringer cable need not be connected to an extension?

if there is no phone in it then no, remove it!!

do you have a test socket? if so, get a filtered faceplate and run router from that...

already got one sir ....tbh the speed and etc... is still faster than my previous ISP (for now anyway) i would just have liked to see a 5 figure sync rate

out of interest how do i get sky to put me on ADSL2+?

I was only activated today so is there a training period or something where they monitor the line?
