      attenuation confusion help please

Hello broadbanders: My router software informs me that my line attenuation down is 58dB but up is 31.5 dB, as I only have one phone line and the resistance, inductance, capacitance, acceptance and impedance of the cable is identical in both directions, why is there a difference. thank you kenny444

Your upstream noise margin will always be different because upstream is at a different frequency than downstream. But someone with a bit more knowledge can confirm this.

      Spot on Monday

Attenuation is a measure of the loss in power of electromagnetic signals for a specific frequency between transmission and reception points - the higher the frequency, the higher the attenuation. The upstream part of the ADSL signal is on a lower frequency than the downstream.
