External Access to a hard drive

      Hi

I have added an Lacie hard drive via a LAN link to the Sky White Netgear router with hopes to access the drive on the network as well as from my laptop whilst away from base.

I have succesfully added the drive to the network and all can see it on the network and use it, but I do not seem to be able to gain access to it whilst away from the office. FTP access is availalbe to the drive system.

I have it on its own IP address in the network.

Any suggestions as to how I get to open it whilst away from my base would be very welcomed.

      BR

Re: External Access to a hard drive

To be able to FTP to the HDD from outside, click on Security > Firewall Rules on the Netgear admin page.

Add an Inbound service. Choose FTP from the drop down list, choose an access policy and enter the LAN IP address of your HDD enclosure. Choose which external IP addresses are allowed access and click Apply.

Tick the Enable box and click Apply.

When you're away from base, you may not know your router WAN IP address. Consider signing up for a free DynDNS account. You can then enter your account details into the router via Advanced > Dynamic DNS and use youraccountname.dyndns.org as the target FTP server name.

      Warning #1
FTP is considered an insecure protocol and your Lacie account details (if it has any) will be transmitted in clear text. Consider using SFTP instead if the Lacie supports it.

      Warning #2
Running a server is, IIRC, against Sky's T&Cs.

      Hi

Many thanks for your prompt reply.

It appears that the drive does not support SFTP but i will look up your suggestion on log in via dynds. It does support HTTP is this more secure than FTP??

      Thanks again

HTTP will still have a potential plain text security problem. I'd be surprised if it supported HTTP and not HTTPS. Which exact Lacie model is it?

If it does do HTTPS, then follow the same instructions as for FTP but just choose HTTPS from the list of supported services in the Firewall Rules section.

Re: External Access to a hard drive

      Hi

The model is a Lacie Edmini V2 500 gig.

I have looked again and it looks like only FTP or HTTP

What i will try and do is to set up the router to access it via either FTP or Http, ensure i can get in then see if HTTPS or SFTP will set up.

thanks for your help, will let you know once I try the access from outside network.

      BR

Re: External Access to a hard drive

Had a quick look at LaCie - Ethernet Disk mini - Gigabit Ethernet & USB 2.0 and it does look like HTTP and FTP only.

The alternative is you have some other device on the LAN - maybe an existing Win or Linux PC - which you VPN or SSH into first and then access the Lacie via that secure tunnel.
