Slow speeds caused by cheap external drive interface

A cheap external USB drive interface caused my speed to drop from 11000 down to 4000-6000. I found the problem quite accidentaly while looking at the router stats and disconnecting the drive: the noise margin went from 7 to 0 when the drive was connected. I've tried this with two machines now, a Mac and a PC and whenever the interface is connected to the USB the noise margin drops to zero. A reconnection quickly follows at a much slower rate.

The interface in question was bought from ebay and is Chinese, you can see one like it here: USB 2.0 TO SATA IDE 2.5 3.5 CABLE WITH POWER ADAPTER on eBay, also, IDE, Cables Connectors, Computing (end time 24-Apr-08 13:24:29 BST). In fact it does quite a good job at connecting any kind of drive quickly and easily, just don't use it when you're downloading something.

If you have unexplained noise problems it may be worth checking your peripherals.

Re: Slow speeds caused by cheap external drive interface

I have one of THESE it does not give me any problems. I don't use the backup feature, but it can connect anything from laptop IDEs to large SATAs. As I fix PCs it is one of the best buys I every made.

You make a very good point, not many would connect a USB device to poor Internet connections, one to bear in mind
