Only allow/block certain computers to connect

      Hi,

I wonder if someone can help me with this one. I have a newer (black - no ariel) Sky Netgear router and need to allow only certain pc's to be able to connect to the internet using it. Using just a password is not an option as users will have the ability to share the said password. Is it possible to allow only certain users in the routers configuration. Thanks.

Re: Only allow/block certain computers to connect

Assuming all users connect to the router wirelessly, it would be possible to enable the "Wireless Station Access List" feature which can be found on the wireless settings tab of the router's interface. Just tick the enable box after you have added the MAC addresses of the PCs you want to allow (including the one you are using to do the setup with).

This would of course prevent the PC's you don't want to have internet access from accessing the router but I guess it would only have the same effect as enabling WPA security and changing the default password - If you only give the password to some of the users, those who don't have it won't be able to connect.

I'm not sure if his really answers your question but if you explain in more detail what you are trying to achieve, someone here may be able to help further.

Re: Only allow/block certain computers to connect

Thanks for your reply. just to clarify. I provide Sky broadband in a shared house. The tennants have te option to pay for internet access, so I need some way of preventing those who do not want to pay for access from using the connection. I have changed the default wireless password and yes I could just supply this to an individual but there is nothing to stop them sharing this password with whoever they choose. so I am looking for a way to allow/block access per PC.

Wot Ratcliffes has said - Wireless Access List (see attached piccy from one of the new Sky routers, but the principle is the same for the older [white] router).

You will need to find the MAC address of each PC that is connecting wirelessly to your router - normally you can get the router to report this to you, or get it from each PC itself. Then enter these into the Wireless Access List and whether or not they know the password they will not get in. Job done.

As rats says - Tick the "turn access control on" icon, from then on only pc's you allow will be able to connect.

The terms and conditions don't actually mention reselling the service. Maybe Sky thought it so blatantly wrong that they couldn't bring themselves even to mention it!

I think it depends on whether it is being resold for a profit or simply to share the cost.

Re: Only allow/block certain computers to connect

Whilst I'm sure that the provision of Sky broadband to tenants in a shared house could be a good profit center, but in this instance this id definitely not the case. In this instance the service was requested by the entire house but none of the tenants wanted to commit to a 12 contract with both BT and Sky so I have taken on the exposure to provide the service to those tenants that want internet access. The reason for my original question is that the tenants have the option to use the internet and for those who choose to take up this option it would be unfair to them if those who declined were also able to use the service.
If you disagree with my thinking then perhaps you could also advise as to which other services I should provide free of charge.

Re: Only allow/block certain computers to connect

I personally find the thought of doing what milgo is quit scary and dangerous. Consider this, if one of the tenants does something that they shouldn't and it is traced to the IP address of the router one could very well find oneself having to answer some rather tricky questions. Bear in mind that increasingly ISPs are being pressured if not forced by the UK government to keep all manner of logging information.

      Just a thought.
