Router overwhelmed by p2p?

Hi All

My V1 router works fairly well when Im simply browsing the internet etc, but if I fire up bittorrent within 10-15 minutes I'll usually lose my http connectivity even though the torrents are still running fine, and although I can get to the router login page, it hangs when trying to log me in. the only way to get it all back is to reboot the router, so Im guessing that the p2p is probably opening too many peer connections and so if effectively DoS attacking me?

Assuming its something along those lines, is there a way to limit the number of connection the router allows bittorrent to open, so that it doesnt get overwhelmed in this way? If not, any other ideas on how I can avoid this?

thanks
Chris

Re: Router overwhelmed by p2p?

you should be able to limit the number of connections in your torrent programme

^^^^ yes, although I dont use the program you do, mine allows me to set upload and download bandwidth limits, I would imagine they are all pretty similar.

In particular make sure your max upload isn't set too high. Anything above 10-15kb/s on the mid package (the upload connection speed is 512kbps-ish, right?) is likely to cause significant slowdown.

that package has 40-45kb/s

30kb/s should be fine with only veryminimal speed change.

Re: Router overwhelmed by p2p?

Hi all, cheers for the replies.

In answer to some of the questions, uPNP is off on the router and Ive set up a static route for the torrent traffic, Ive limited uploads down to 5kb on my client (Azureus) and Ive set it to limit connections to 65 globally and 40 per torrent, which is at or below those recommended on this Wiki on the subject Network connection dying - AzureusWiki , so Ive tweaked as much as I can on the torrent app itself.

Any other ideas?

cheers
Chris

Re: Router overwhelmed by p2p?

I wonder if it is the limited connections in XP which is causing your problem. By default XP is limited to 10, MS's idea to help prevent the spread of Virus and trojans, anyone with a basic knowledge of arithmetic will realize how futile this is. Changing this by reg hack can be done, but the easiest way is to download XP-Antispy a little program that can be used for all sorts of tweaks. I have read that 40 is the absolute maximum available, but even doubling to 20 could make all the difference. Might be worth a try

Re: Router overwhelmed by p2p?

Cheers for the reply but its definitely not the OS, the machine Im connecting to the internet on (my laptop) isn't the same as the machine I use for Azureus, and the router itself hangs to responses to an admin login so its definitely hardware related.
