      poor wifi signal on dg934g

anyone else think the wifi signal on the dg834g router is crap ?

i am sitting in the same room as the router and i'm only getting 65% signal with 9% noise.

it takes an absolute age to upload files from laptop to PC (pc is wired, laptop is wireless). downloading files from PC to laptop is much quicker though.

i've tried using different channels (1,6 and 11) and makes no difference.

i don't have any cordless phones that might cause the problem. at present there is one other wifi network in range but is another channel 6.

the internal aerial on the router surely can't help matters?

i've attached a screen grab to show the wifi networks that are about.

this was taken whilst the laptop was sitting right next to the router. the best i could get was 75%. further away i move the laptop the strength decreases.

i'm using a macbook pro (with built-in airport "n"). router is set to "g only".

as a side note - internet speeds are great. it's just the internal wifi network that the issue is with.

Well not really much you can do about it. Suggest using a wired connection or failing that getting home of the homeplug power network adapters.

Re: poor wifi signal on dg934g

not much i can do about it ?

surely i should be getting close to 100% when the router is only about 12 feet away from the laptop ?

using a wired connection with a laptop kind of defeats the purpose of being wireless!

if sky aren't able to supply a router that gives good wifi coverage, then they should let me use my own router that does with good wifi coverage.

No there isn't much you can do. Given you can't use another router unless Sky send you one with external antenna that could be upgraded which may help things.

It could be the internal wi-fi chipset on the Apple laptop isn't that good, could be interference from local (Next door) sources...

I personally have the same router and find it works quite well given the signal has to travel though some rather thick walls this old house has.

Re: poor wifi signal on dg934g

The new router has been opened and the aerial is on the bottom, which means if it is sitting flat the best signal is going into the surface it is sitting on. Stand the router on end and point the bottom in the direction you want to receive. Also try Channel 13, for some reason many seem to think this does not work, probably due to incorrect info given by Sky.

Edit - Sky do not say you cannot use another router, only that you must use their one to connect to the internet. There is nothing to stop you connecting another router to the Sagem/Netgear and using it's wireless capabilities.

      change the channels.
