do you need to send the router back to sky when you leave them and is it any better then the first netgear model,son has just left them but has the router ,could i change the password and use it if mine fails etc

According to the T and C's the router excluding the software is your property if you decide to leave. I suppose to be pedantic you could take Sky's software off it and put the standard Netgear FW on.
You could use it as a spare, although that is against the T and C's as well to use someone else's log in details. I would personally keep the router as a spare. Your call.
