      Re: Were Is This New Firmware For The V1 Routers!!!!

      Sky will not release their new firmware until it works reliably. They have had several versions to play with, none of which have come up to scratch. Sky are not in control of the firmware, they are reliant upon Netgear to sort it out for them. They are looking to get the firmware to work to the best possible standard with their DSLAM equipment (Lucent Stinger kit).

      What have they been doing all of this time? Working on it. There have been problems with the successive versions and so Sky took the decision to hold back until they get one that is fit for purpose.

      I think that what is most disconcerting is the sheer variableness of the firmware. For some it works 100%, for others very variably less! Sky do need to make a decision and take the plunge sooner rather than later.

      Thats the way things go sometimes. I reckon that you can expect something to happen during the first half of 2008.

      well the last thing i heard about the update was that the first batch was getting sent soon and about the unhappy customers sky have over a million customers and only 10% of them have had a problem with their service and 50% of the cases it is a physical setup issue so i think thats quite good for a new isp.

      Re: Were Is This New Firmware For The V1 Routers!!!!

      I'm new-ish to Sky and their router...it's worked pretty much without issue for me until a recent problem (separate post elsewhere) and that may not even be down to the router...still investigating...

      However, I have to wonder why Sky went to all the trouble of forcing a "bespoke" firmware into the Netgear router when there was a perfectly acceptable "off the shelf" version available - which could have reduced Sky's "multi-million pound loss" by drastically reducing the suport costs...

      "Hello this is Sky Technical Support. If you are having an issue with out router, please call NetGear on..."

      That is;

      1. More effective than the totally untrained Sky TS staff
      2. Cheaper than the totally untrained Sky TS staff
      3. Better image for Sky as problems with routers might actually get solved

      There is a conspiracy theory out there that the Firmware is being used for data gathering. not sure if anyone can confirm or deny this.

      roflmao - Do you really think they could manage to achieve that? Simple things like UPnP and so on don't even work properly.

      I am sure Netgear would have been over the moon at being deluged by hundreds of calls a day, many of which would have nothing to do with the router.
