      Firmware Upgrade

I pay for the Max service but force the router to operate in GDMT mode.
Having done every test known to man, it appears that my line suffers from some sort of external noise blip after 18.00 hrs, the nm drops below 6.9 and my problems start.
In GDMT mode the speed is only 8M but the router always behaves perfectly.
Sky tells me that I cannot drop down to the mid package until May so unless they get their proverbial finger out and put the upgrade out, I not a happy bunny.

      Re: Firmware Upgrade

If I had known it was going to take so long for this update to arrive, I would have put in the effort to create a modified firmware that added an extra page of ADSL settings - like the ones you get with Mognuts - to the Sky firmware for the DG834GT.

I just know that the moment I'd have finished working on it, Sky would release the update.

      Re: Firmware Upgrade

The news on the FW upgrade has gone all quiet. So I would assume is definitely not imminent James.

With James having cracked open the V2 firmwares and discovered the security gaffe in the V1, it wouldn't surprise me if Sky have decided to put more work into making this one both secure and "uncrackable". If so then considering the time it has taken them so far, I doubt we'll see it before the summer.

      Re: Firmware Upgrade

      Really? Why's that?

I bet before the security flaw was exposed the new V1 firmware was using the same algorithm and variables. Surely you don't think they'd put it out knowing it to be insecure? They'd get doubly crucified when the press pick up on this.

And if they had adopted the same crack resistant methodology as used in the V2 Netgear, that's already shown to be useless.

If they change the algorithm then they'd need to send out new "Keep me handy" cards for each router. I can imagine that that would be no trivial task, having to gather together router MAC addresses, router serial numbers and the customers to which each router was sent. And the process of actually printing a million different cards will be quite a lot of work too.

And then, we haven't even started considering the issue of how this can be presented to customers in a way that doesn't make Sky bad. We know for a fact that they've know about this issue for a month, and yet haven't notified their customers, except those who use this site. The fact that both the V2 routers use data other than just the MAC address, hints at the possibility that they might have know about it for longer than that.

In all honesty, I think Sky's best response to the whole security issue would be to send out new routers to their customers. Obviously, that would be hugely expensive, but it would be easier to present it in such a way that Sky don't look as bad.
