Connection drops when another housemate logs on

Hi all, I could really use some help here.

I live in a shared house and the internet has always been poor (rebooting about once a day, sometimes more but I could live with it).

Now, a new guy moved in with his laptop. It seems every time he turns on his laptop I get disconnected in my room. Then I reboot the router and get back on for a little and then my conenction goes again. At the same time, when Im on he goes down to reboot the connection. Theres obviously a problem with us both being connected at the same time. I did get a warning one time saying that there was an IP conflict. I randomly changed my IP to try to deal with this and that didnt work.

Does anybody have any idea what the problem is? Its driving me crazy!

Re: Connection drops when another housemate logs on

Having the same IP address could have accounted for that - for example, if one of you had their PC with a fixed address of 192.168.0.2, which would normally be assigned as the first address given out by the router. But the fact that you changed your IP address and the problem persisted, pretty much rules that out.

Have either of you got Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) switched on? ICS forces the PC to use 192.168.0.1 as its IP address, and that can cause all manner of strange effects.

If that doesn't fix it, you could try changing the IP address of the router. Go to http://192.168.0.1/ and login using username admin and password sky. The click on the link "LAN IP Setup" - you'll find it under Advanced Settings. Change the LAN IP address to 192.168.0.254 and click on apply. You'll need to reboot your PC to get it pick up the new settings.

Are all the computers connected by wireless?. This could be a clash of channels

If your router is set to 108 auto, switch it back to g&b, he may have an adapter that is connecting at 108 and throwing you off every time he logs on.

Re: Connection drops when another housemate logs on

      Unfortunately these havent worked.

I have discovered that if I turn access control on and disable his machine mine works perfectly....but I cant really do that. I seem to be capped at about 15kb/sec when he has access and its not due to him downloading.
But perhaps it provides a clue into what the problem is?

I still have the idea that he has a more powerful adapter and is sucking out your bandwidth. Are you in the same room as the router? If so connect by wire and see if it makes a difference.
If you have to use wireless, you could also try setting the mode to g & b and changing the channel, this could possibly reduce his connection and improve yours. You may have to experiment to find a happy medium.

I get exactly the same problem. Only started happening recently.

I needed my NAT to be set to open so I keep having to turn Upnp on all the time. But the connection still drops out about 2/3 times a day.
