Unhappy Can't access certain webpages, but can others

I am suffering a bizarre problem in that I can access most pages on the net, but can't others. I have never had this problem before with the countless other ISPs I have used.

On a seemingly random basis, I try visiting some webpages and they are unavailable. I get a page saying:

" Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

      Most likely causes:
You are not connected to the Internet.
      The website is encountering problems.
There might be a typing error in the address.

      What you can try:
      Diagnose Connection Problems

      More information "

I try refresh etc. but nothing works.

The pages don't work in either IE or FF.

When I visit the page a few hours later, I can access it.

I have rang Sky customer support a number of times, but the staff don't seem to be particularly knowledgeable and don't fancy calling them again just to be told to delete cookies and reset my Internet Explorer settings.

I am using IE 7.0 on a Windows Vista system.

Anybody else suffer the same issue?

Re: Can't access certain webpages, but can others

I'm a new Sky Broadband user and have been facing this issue since Saturday (connection activated on Friday, Feb 1). Not just this but it's now extended to Gmail, where I can't send emails - it gets stuck at "sending". And I can't download anything, resulting in this error message while the download is on: "file could not be saved, because the source file could not be read". Firefox is setup right, deleted compreg.dat file and history.dat is not read-only. Btw, all this occurs in IE as well.

Most importantly, virus definitions and windows updates are also failing - emailed Sky, let's hope they help find a solution fast.

As well, everything works great when I connect through a web-based proxy, so this is clearly a Sky issue.

This problem is also discussed here:
      Loading pages

There seem to be lots of questions, but few answers.
I have not tried the suggestion from balloon (post #2)
as I hate messing around with my router.

You don't need to mess around with the router.... the settings are applied via your operating system as well (provided you are connected by ethernet). See a video tutorial for Vista here: http://www.skyuser.co.uk/tools/DNSVI...or%20Vista.swf

You should be able to do this for wireless connections as well...... I don't think you can on Macs tho.

balloon, I just changed the dns addresses on my notebook PC and restarted but it doesn't seem to help. Thanks for the suggestion, however.

Re: Can't access certain webpages, but can others

      Update:
across the two threads it is worth noting that:

      * the "not loading" problem is relatively new
      * its just a minor irritation for some, like me,
but for others its more serious.
      * It affects both Vista and XP and
      * Both Firefox and Explorer

I only use a hard wired connection, never wireless,
      which is de-activated.

It's worth noting that as of 20 minutes ago, my Gmail send issues are fixed and I can download files with no problem. IMO, Sky is probably aware of these issues and maybe they've started to work on fixing it. One of the sites I couldn't access earlier is now reachable too.

Windows Vista updates and CA Anti-Virus updates are still failing at this time however.
