Unable to Reserve IP (Illegal IP)

I am wanting to reserve an IP address for my computer, but every time I try I get the error message "Illegal IP"

I have shortened my dynamic range and have tried to add a reserve IP (192.168.0.235) above my dynamic list but am still getting this error message.

My computer which I am trying to do this from is still using a dynamic IP from the server as I am unable to currently change it to its own reserved IP.

Could someone please guide me on how I would be able to go about adding a Reserve IP.

      Thank you.

Re: Unable to Reserve IP (Illegal IP)

If you're trying to reserve an address, it has to be within the DHCP range of addresses. The alternative way of having a PC on a fixed address, is to change the DHCP range, and assign an address outside of the range by hand on the PC.

You seem to have mixed up the two techniques.

Re: Unable to Reserve IP (Illegal IP)

      As James has already said,

if you define your range as being from 192.168.0.2 - 192.168.0.20 you can only then reserve an ip from within this range (192.168.0.1 being set as the routers IP). To reserve the .235 youd have to include it in the range or start at the opposite end of the scale.

Re: Unable to Reserve IP (Illegal IP)

If you just want to ensure that your PC has the same LAN address each time you log on go to the LAN IP Settings, click Add and put in the address, name and MAC address of your PC. If you are not sure of the MAC, go to Attached Devices and copy and paste it from there. If you choose a number different from the one your PC is using at present, you will have to reboot your PC for it to take effect.

Re: Unable to Reserve IP (Illegal IP)

Oh ok, it works now, ha ha.

It's just i read a tutorial which said I had to choose a reserve IP outside that dynamic range and not one inside of it. Obviously it did not account for all routers, as some are clever enough to not have to do that.

      Thanks for all your help!

Re: Unable to Reserve IP (Illegal IP)

What youll find is that those IP's are still within the range but flagged as being for static use and not dynamic.

I swear I saw this function in the cisco router I had about 8 months back, before it unfortunately passed away to join its maker in the sky.

Since this time Is simply didnt need AS MUCH in a router but still.
