Slow Download on computer but not on laptop

Help . My 8 Mb SKY Broadband is now only giving a max of 1.5 Mb/sec download speed and slows right down to about 300 Kb/sec in busy times...but a laptop connected to the second the ethernet connection on the router at the same time is giving me a constant 6 Mb/sec. Up to a month ago I used to get that level of download speed on my computer as well. What is wrong ? The line is obviously working OK and this is verified by the router test statistics and by external tests done by SKY and BT. I have exchanged the yellow ethernet cables and connections and waggled them about to ensure a good connection exists to the computer without improvement. Is there some problem with my Dell 2400 Dimension Network Controller which the book tells me is a integrated 10/100 ethernet ??? I can logically understand a faulty ethernet unit in the computer would cause this, but find it strange that it slows down so dramatically in the evenings ?
Any practical suggestions how to correct the basic problem please ?

Just to confirm, this only happens in the evenings on your PC, morning and afternoons your PC can download as 6mb (ish)? Your laptop can always download at the faster speed, right?

Re: Slow Download on computer but not on laptop

The max I can get ANYTIME on the computer is 1.5Mb and this drops to about 400Kb in the evenings.
The laptop gives 6 Mb at all times.

Re: Slow Download on computer but not on laptop

My Problem Solved !!!!!! Now getting over 6Mb/sec. Yippeeee !!
CHECK YOUR COMPUTER BEFORE BLAMING THE BT LINE OR SKY !!!
The Key Trick for me was to plug in a laptop to the spare router slot and check the computer download speed against that of the laptop. This clearly showed me that my computer was at fault rather than the line etc.
Got the answer of how to correct the problem in the computer from "DLS Zone uk" forum
      What to do :-
Check and reset the network controller ethernet settings in your computer registry using TCP Optimizer from
      SpeedGuide.net :: TCP Optimizer / Downloads
You need to download and save the TCP OPTIMIZER
Run the optimizer, set the connection speed you are supposed to be operating at...set to optimal settings...apply changes.
This details the changes made to your registry and resets them correctly.
My download speed immediately jumped from 1.5 Mb to 6.25 Mb. Brilliant.
Pity that the SKY techies did not put me on to this sooner, surely they know about it ? Maybe not ?
Anyway, we in Sky Users know now eh......Happy Downloading !!!

Optimising your Broadband Connection...Thank You LNB for great article

Went on the blink again last night down to 512k, so I reset again using the TCP Optimiser. Fine Tuned this time by resetting to the actual Largest MTU as recommended in the LNB article on both the computer and the router.
Worked a treat and back to 6Mb again. Still OK this morning.

Hope it stays that way...we will see.

Re: Slow Download on computer but not on laptop

Three days on and still getting 6Mb off peak and about 3Mb in peak times. What a difference.
Fine tuning the router to the same max MTU seems to have done the trick.
