Thumbs down Re: Router Freeze, Loss of Connection Possible Fix

Hi, my Sky Broadband (Max) was activated Friday and since then I have rebooted the router hundreds of times. Sometimes it needs three times to get the internet light on. It was particularly bad today - every 5 to 40 mins and I was unable to do any work. The Tier 3 engineer called me Sunday. I missed the call and I have two more chances and then I think I start again. I even phoned Sky customer services and they were very good saying my call had been escalated and they were speaking to management to arrange for an engineer to call me asap, but the engineer never called me back.

I think the problem is noise? I am only about a mile from the exchange.

I have changed the router settings as detailed in this thread. UPNP is off and have tried changing channels etc. I am currently running the stats.

Your Noise Margins look very low, have you tried testing via the engineers socket inside your BT junction box ???

Living 1 mile from the exchange , your attenuation figures are very high too.

Thanks, I am new to ADSL. I think I have an idea of what is happening now and hopefully Tier 3 can fix the phone line. I haven't tried the engineers socket yet, I will tomorrow, but all I have is one master socket and the microfilter for the phone/broadband is plugged in there.

Undo the two screws and take off the faceplate, on the right you will see a small socket. Test your stats before and after using this engineers socket.

If the noise reduces then an ASDL faceplate might be worth the money.

Re: Router Freeze, Loss of Connection Possible Fix

I'm sure you have already done it but have a look in the Tutorial section here as some good tips to use.

I was in a similar position to you and down speeds were 4447 kbps and router kept dying on me.

I followed the Tutorials and now firing on all cylinders with down speed of 15323 (quoted) and currently achieving on 9.7 db NM

Re: Router Freeze, Loss of Connection Possible Fix

Hi, thanks. I did lots of speed tests last night using the engineers socket with just the microfilter plugged in and the router on my laptop. There wasn't much change. I noticed the speed went down and the noise margin went up, but the router (internet light) still froze after about 45mins so I could never complete the full hour. I tried about 3 times. 7pm to Midnight.

      System Up Time 00:05:04
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 3872 kbps 768 kbps

      Final Stats before router freeze:

      System Up Time 00:15:34
      ADSL Link Downstream Upstream
Connection Speed 3872 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 53.0 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 9.4 db 13.0 db

So, the problem is not solved yet and the speed is under 4MB, but wierdly the speed test on my wireless PC upstairs is better reaching about 5MB.

      From PC:

      System Up Time 00:24:30

Connection Speed 5152 kbps 768 kbps
Line Attenuation 53.0 db 31.5 db
Noise Margin 6.6 db 12.0 db

So, I have left the PC on today to see what happens.

Also looks like Portsmouth Exchange only has max of 8MB.

Re: Router Freeze, Loss of Connection Possible Fix

i connect via the ethernet cable and i get non existant download speeds after a day or so.. the only way for me to get my bandwidth back is to switch off my router at the mains then turn it back on after a min or so. can anyone tell me if this is normal?

      my router stats are

Connection Speed 14623 kbps 764 kbps
Line Attenuation 31.5 db 17.7 db
Noise Margin 6.8 db 12.5 db

i do not pretend to understand these numbers or what they mean but any advice would be greatly appreciated i have turned of upnp

      thaks Pete

Resetting your router when it crashes is normal, though you may find it easier to just pull the power cord out of the router, wait 10 seconds then put it back in again. Saves fiddling about with the mains switch!
Your connection speed downloads at 14623 kbps which means about 14.6 Mb (which is excellent!).
