Can V2 Netgear and Sagem Routers Users..

Please perform this little test for me and tell me the results.
The reason I ask is that I've just joined, got a Sagem router and think it has issues.

Dont have anythign run that uses your bandwidth in anger, or has lots of connections. Torrents are a no no in this area.

Open up a DOS/CMD prompt and type
PING -T *WWW.BBC.CO.UK* (remove the * , it's the only way I can stop auto linking)
You should get a steady , ish response. Mine is 50ms, not bad but not great.

Now , whilst the ping is still running (that's what the -T bit does) run a speedtest from *www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk*
Watch your ping whilst the download test is running, and let me know roughly what your ping is going up to. With me my response will jump up to about 100ms or therabouts. Nothign to worry about.

Now when the Upload test starts again check the ping responses. With me they either time out or are between 700 and 1000ms.

      Post back your results here.
I'm conviced this sagem router has issues. There is no way in the world it should be troubled to that extent when a 300kbs upload is going on (or connect here).

Re: Can V2 Netgear and Sagem Routers Users..

It's not just the V2 routers that do it, the V1 does as well. Ping time to www.bbc.co.uk is around 33ms without the speed test running. It goes up to around 75-100ms during the download test, and between 750 and 1000ms during the upload test.

But this is an ADSL effect. You're connection to the exchange runs at a much faster downstream speed compared to its upstream speed. However, between you and the speed test site, every other part of the network is operating at the same speed in both directions. The upshot of this is that it's much, much easier to saturate the ADSL link when uploading than it is when downloading.

Now, ping times are round trip timings - they measure how long it takes to get a ping response after sending a ping request. During the download test, there's likely to be more "free space" for the ping response to get back to you. During the upload test, there's less free room for your ping request to get out.

The asymmetric speed plays a detrimental role in another way too. Let's say, for the sake of argument, that your ADSL link is sending out or receiving ten data packets (the data being the "payload" of the speed test) for every ping request or response. It takes less time to receive ten full data packets than it does to send ten full data packets, thus the ping times increase dramatically while a lot of data is being uploaded.

I hope I've explained that sufficiently. It is a rather a tricky thing to get your head around, but when you think about it, it is behaving as expected.

Re: Can V2 Netgear and Sagem Routers Users..

You explained it perfectly, although I already knew what you are saying.

The problem I have is that even though the line is saturated in terms of upload the router does in my mind perform pretty badly under duress.
I've never seen a router behave so slow under high throughput.

I'm going to try pinging some sites with 1024 blocks instead when I get home. Should give a better indication if it's the router or just down to bandwidth saturation.

The sagem also has issues with lots of connections (eg torrents etc).
I inadvertently set the max connections on Utorrent high the other day (whilst trying to get decent speed out of it) and that definatley troubles the thing. Is probably just a nat table issue (dont know what the nat table size is do you?)

Still interesting on the first reply to this post, which although little detail, if it is a complete ping trace whilst running a speed test then it would suggest that the netgears do perform better under load (with the highest ping only hitting 100ms on that trace).

Sorry, that was from start to finish with both the upload and download test completed.

How strange, as it seems your Sagem is fine any dandy during upload (or at least not 1000ms).

I've been told I've got a Netgear replacement on it's way so I'll try that when it lands.

Are you on Max (or alterntivly are you not on Connect, as I am?)/ Scrap that quesstion, i've just seen it listed on your profile.

I don't really understand the results, but logic tells me the Sagem is better than the Netgear on that particular test.

      Yep on your tests.

On my Sagem, it hits 1000ms (and also times out) on the upload where as both your routers seem very happy.

I'm puzzled, but I'll wait for the new netgear to turn up , hopefully.
