Smile Connected to Router, but cannot connect Internet.

I have just got a Desktop PC runnig Windows Vista, and i have been using skybroadband for about a week. First couple of days we could use the internet fine, however this has now stopped. All the correct lights are on on our Router, i have changed the micr filters and rebooted the router. Sky Tech support tried to set the IP address and i tried to connect to there IP address via the web but to no avail. I have been passed to higher level tech support but both they and I have been too busy to try and solve the problem. I am going to give them a call and see fi they can solve the issue, but just wondered if any one had any idea. As far asi can tell all AntiVirus/Firewalls etc are turned off, along with McAfee, but still no luck. only had the PC a week so not much on that can effect this. I have a basic knowledge of Pc but help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Connected to Router, but cannot connect Internet.

Is Mcafee the only firewall? If you can access the router from the PC then you have connectivity to the router and therefor should have connectivity to the internet unless either a firewall setting is wrong or there is a problem between the router and the exchange.
If there is more than one firewall on the PC then that could be the problem also if Mcafee has not been set correctly that could be the problem. Have you tried checking your add remove programs list in control panel for mcafee, norton, zone alarm etc and actually removing them from the PC completely to see if that is the problem?

Re: Connected to Router, but cannot connect Internet.

Anti virus isn't the issue, firewall software is. Please do not mistake one for the other, there are a number of all in one tools out there now but there are still some firewall only tools and anti-virus only tools. Check your programs list and post back with any that mention norton, symantec, mcafee, AVG, Zone Alarm etc or the word security or firewall later on and we can check them for you before you remove anything.
Can you browse to the router settings screen at all? (192.168.0.1) if not then it may well be an issue on the pc stopping the connection.

Re: Connected to Router, but cannot connect Internet.

will post back with my findings before removing anything. I cannot connect to the router settings screen, thats what Sky Tech support tried to get me to do but to no avail. I appreciate this may be a difficult question to answer as there may be several things but.. What else would stop the connection apart from a Firewall?

Re: Connected to Router, but cannot connect Internet.

Static IP set in the adaptor TCP/IP screen can do it if it is set incorrectly.
Proxy servers set in IE, tools, internet options, connections, LAN settings can also cause a problem if set incorrectly.
Are you connecting by ethernet cable to the router?

you could also have a look in your device list (in device manager)and make sure you have no yellow triangles (check your network adapters as they may have been updated and been corrupted)

Re: Connected to Router, but cannot connect Internet.

That's one of the checks that the T1 should have done already as well as going into the device settings to check the IP address in use.

Re: Connected to Router, but cannot connect Internet.

You noticed the use of the word "should" I take it lol Sometimes steps get missed or ignored by some staff, annoying when you get a follow up call from an annoyed customer and you figure out something was missed and it should have already been sorted out
