      Re: Belkin Router Help

bear with me here as i'm not a whizz at these things,
i'm looking through your post and just wanted to ask some questions

because his router is disconnecting all the time and when it's not disconnecting it refuses to load pages and sky have all but refused to help him.
if the above is while wireless did you try changing the channel, if it was working then became unusable it could be other peoples wirless on the same channel

So the alternative is to change the router and if that doesn't work then consider a reformat and re-install.
do you feel there may be a problem with the computer (or is the re-install to do with flashing the router?)

Unlikely, currently his netgear (sky supplied router) is connected to the master socket directly and then wirelessly connected to his pc, which is upstairs and uses a netgear wireless card to detect the signal (as recommended elsewhere on this forum).

Also for the first few months he was very happy with the service it's only the last two months that is become un-useable.
would you know if the problem was wireless or errors on the line (the winter months do cause more interference)

sorry if you have already given answers to the above, and sorry i cannot help more with the belkin (i have only ever used the sky supplied netgear router)

also, bare in mind that although products are recommended, it by no means they'll work for everyone...

      1. Yes we have tried using different channels
      2. Well if after using a known to be working well router (belkin) the system is still disconnecting etc, then a re-install is an option. And no we've not flashed the Netgear Router.
      3. Firstly Sky advised him to connect to master socket, not an extension and to go wireless. Calling Sky on a subsequent occasion totally contradicted what was said. He was told to connect as close to the PC as possible using the yellow cable. (go figure sky tech. = useless)

Thanks to previous poster for the link, will relay the info and hopefully it'll be of some use.

Well, in fairness to Sky, it's impossible to know for sure what the best setup is in every situation. If there are issues with wireless communication (e.g., thick walls or lots of neighbours with wireless networking), then plugging the router into an extension and using wired networking might make things better. If on the other hand, the phone line is noisy or has high attenuation, then it might be better to have the router plugged into the master socket and use wireless networking.

Suggesting different potential solutions doesn't necessarily imply stupidity on Sky's part.

      Re: Belkin Router Help

Hey guys... I think were all missing the point a little.

irrelavent of if we can or should change routers.
Or if sky can or are capable of decent technical help.

The facts are my father wants to change his router.
He's got a good quality Belkin to change to
And the sky supplied one is the original Netgear.

Does anyone have a full and concise method of setting up said router
      to work with sky?

Presumably you searched and searched and didn't find this sticky at the top of the Technical forum (where all non Sky router info is)?:

Non-Sky Router Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

There isn't much info needed other than the router username and password. If you are having problems then possibly you are mistyping them - use cut and paste.
