Smile Sky V1 firmware update server now up!

The domain name for the firmware update server for the V1 routers now appears to be up, or to be more precise, dg834gt.skyfirmware.com now resolves to an IP address, which it didn't before.

I'm going to see if I can provoke the provisioning daemon to trigger a firmware update, so keep your fingers crossed for me!

I suppose after the whole Skoogle mess up that Sky would want this to go a lot smoother.

Can you imagine the mess they would be in if they rushed this one and "bricked" a million routers, that would be really, really, bad........

Re: Sky V1 firmware update server now up!

Now that would be a total catastrophe.

Anyway, the update server seems to be in place now, but it isn't serving up any tasty new firmware. To force the provisioning daemon to check for an update, you have to unset the prov_last_update_time and prov_last_attempt_time nvram variables, reboot and then wait 5 minutes. But as this debug output shows, it didn't actually get anything:

      Code:
      Step_0 Show Time...
      get_fvc_file_method_http check iDailyCount:2..
      FVC file get time interval_1-10: 5 mins:60...
      select_fvc_server_domain:dg834gt.skyfirmware.com...
Get file provisiong http: dg834gt.skyfirmware.com, 001B2Fxxxxxx...
Failed to get fvc file by wget...

Re: Sky V1 firmware update server now up!

To be honest I would rather wait until after Xmas and make sure it was done right, rather than have it rushed 2 weeks earlier with the potential of a major foul up and not having any internet at all over Xmas.

Re: Sky V1 firmware update server now up!

Well there's a machine there now with the right domain name and it wasn't there yesterday. (Yes, I really am that sad that I check every day).

Of course they could just be testing the update server to see if it can cope with a million hits per day, because that's what's going to be happening. I hope their log files are being written to a big, big disk…

Re: Sky V1 firmware update server now up!

If I was Sky I would be looking at a rollout of say 20,000 routers a day for 3 days, if there isn't 60,000 phone calls saying that their router is bust step it up to 30-50k a day.

It would take 3-4 weeks but it would be a sensible way to proceed rather than try 1million in one go.

Re: Sky V1 firmware update server now up!

Well, the server will get a million hits a day regardless of whether it offers a download or not. At the moment, the provisioning daemon connects to dg834gt.skyfirmware.com and tries to fetch a file whose name is the router's MAC address. At the moment though, it's getting a zero length file, so the router rejects this file and doesn't reflash itself. It's notable that it's a zero length file, not a "404 file not found" error. That suggests that despite the fact that the server seems to be an ordinary Apache web server running on Debian Linux, it must be modified in some way, or have a specially written module, because that's not normal behaviour.

But it may well be the case that the update server will only serve the new firmware to a specific range of MAC addresses, say 001B2F960000 to 01B2F96FFFF one day, 001B2F970000 to 001B2F97FFFF the next, so that if there are problems, the update can be stopped before things get out of hand.
