How do i change the DNS on my router.

I've been having big problems with connectivity, and some one suggested that i use openDNS instead of the current DNS which is on my Netgear router....

Does anyone know how i get to the control panel on my router that will allow me to change my DNS?........i can get to the 'Router Stats' panel which allows me to see the DNS....but how do i change it.

      Cheers

Re: How do i change the DNS on my router.

You can't change them without re-flashing the router to a standard Netgear firmware.

You can change the DNS on the computer itself though if you don't fancy breaking the T&C's of your Sky contract.

Re: How do i change the DNS on my router.

o.k. i've changed the DNS on my macbook, all i need to do is wait for the connection to drop to see if it works or not (slightly cynical i know but what do you expect when i've had such a bad connection for so long)

is it better to change the DNS on the router or on the individual computers themselves or is there no advantage other than only having to change the DNS once if its done on the router?

      also....(so many questions)

what are the pro's and cons of flashing the router?

      great forum by the way...

I think you may be able to, but you would have to sign up to https://www.dyndns.com/ which seems to be the only option. Click Dynamic DNS on the router menu. It is easier just to use OPenDNS on your PC(s). Details HERE

Well, technically you are better off doing it on the router, as that is a central point, but in the real world it makes little difference.

Flashing the router opens up all the things that Sky removed, such as changing the DNS, allowing you access to your username and password, and also stabilizes some connection drop out/slow down problems.

The downside is that it is a grey area as far as Sky's T&C's go. There is no way of knowing what action they would take if they discovered you using a re-flashed router.

Re-flashin my router has made it more stable, and given me access to things I needed/wanted to change centrally. your mileage may vary!

For what it's worth, I was running OPEN DNS servers on my Macbook for about 3 months before flashing my router and didn't notice any difference.

You don't need to reflash the router to change the DNS settings. This link explains how to do it.

Re: How do i change the DNS on my router.

      thanks sky goat,

i've just changed the DNS on my macbook and it seems to have solved the problem but it doesnt seemed to have worked on my PC laptop (if only everyone had a mac)...

so it makes me think it could be something else other than the DNS...

am i right in thinking this?

Yeah, this works well. I have changed mine to look at a local DNS server which I run, before a sky one. I use opendns and skys as referers to my own server.
