Unhappy wireless connected but no internet access

Hi all, are you all sitting comfortably? Then I'll begin:-

I have bought a new laptop, put in the disk and can now connect to the internet both wirelessly and via cable. Both worked perfectly. Took laptop top work. Created a new dialup connection which worked perectly. All is good in the world.

Then I take it home and now cannot connect to the internet wirelessly. Can only connect to the net with the cable. I can get it connect wirelessly to the router and have turned off encryption but still no good. I have deleted the dial up connection, still no good. Have spoken to sky tech support, what a joke, who say the problem is my laptop's wifi connection. How can this be if I can get connect to the router wirelessly?

I have done all the usual stuff. Turn of router, reset router, have tried controlling the connection with both windows and Realtek's own wireless lan utility both give same result. No internet connection.

I have a little computer knowledge so be gentle. It must be something simple as all I did was connect via dialup at work. Nothing else has changed.

I also have a desktop pc up stairs connected to the router with long cable. Tried to reproduce fault on this one too. Tried dialing out on an old dialup connection setting. When I tried to connect the internet again I had the same problem. Unable to connect. This connection has since come back after all the playing with router connections and settings. Although I used to leave the the router on 24/7. But last time I tried to connect I had to turn the router off and on again before it would connect. But at least it's on.

At present I am sitting in the hall with the laptop as only have a small cable to connect to the router. Or have to keep running upstairs to browse for answers to my problems. I have been browsing for 2 days now but not found anything. Hope someone can help.

Also forgot to mention that I have tried connecting with firefox with same result. Can't get on the internet.

      Regards

      Paul

It looks like the dial up connection has put a setting in which is still there. You could try this, go to the Internet Options in the Control Panel, click the Connections tab, if it is not grayed out tick the Never Dial a Connection button. If it is available, click the Settings button, and untick all the boxes. Now click the LAN settings button at the bottom, make sure that all the boxes there are unticked.

Now go to the Network Settings in the Control Panel, right click your Adapters icon and select Properties. Highlight the Internet Protocol and click the Properties button, make sure that Obtain an IP address and DNS automatically are ticked. Reboot your PC.

Unhappy Re: wireless connected but no internet access

      Hi Isitme,

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately all the settings are already as you suggested. I have aslo noticed that the internet cabled connections to the router now seem to drop the internet connection. Used to stay connected all day. I have to switch the router off then on again before it will connect to the internet. Very strange.

Re: wireless connected but no internet access

Just had a look at wireless network connection status and there is no default gateway. Is this normal? The local area connection has one!!

Re: wireless connected but no internet access

It's normal if you have no connection to the outside world!

You can connect to the router via wireless but not get any further.

Do you have any anti-virus programs running such as Norton? I have had problems with Norton blocking access to the internet on different networks.

If you do have an A/V program running or any type of software firewall then try turning that off, and seeing what happens when you try to connect.

Do you have one of the new (black) or old (white) routers?

Re: wireless connected but no internet access

      Hi

That sounds like my problems. So it will have a gateway when I connect to the outside world?

The router is white and I have AVG free edition running which was running when everything was working correctly. Did turn it off but same result. No wireless internet connection.

The only firewall running is windows which again was running when everything was connecting properly.

I think the Dial up connection has been a red herring and you are suffering from one of the many reasons for non-connection. If you can log on to the router, it is unlikely to be a firewall problem. When you are in the router status page do you have an IP address? When you loose the connection, does the router disconnect from the net or just from your PCs? I am beginning to wonder if your router is failing.

      Broadcast Name Enabled

I have noticed that the ADSL IP address has changed since I looked this morning. It was then 90.201.160.141.
When I loose the connection I think the router disconnects from the net. How do I confirm one or the other? I will pay more attention next time.

      More news.

Just lost all connections and the router shows internet light is green. Unable to connect to the router setting page when this happens. Router turned off and on and repair connection then back on internet with cable. Still no wireless connection.

It would be a great help if you could go to START=>RUN type CMD and press {ENTER}. From there type IPCONFIG /all and press {ENTER}. Then report what you see specifically under the wireless adapter. It should look similar to what is below. Make sure you do this when connected by wireless only.
      ===================================
      Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection:
      Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
      Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Name of Your Wireless Adapter
