Yet another "I'm being disconnected a lot at peak times" thread... [stats included]

This is a discussion on Yet another "I'm being disconnected a lot at peak times" thread... [stats included] within the Sky Router forums, part of the Sky Broadband help category; I would just read the other posts but I don't have much idea of what the stats mean. Any help ...

Your sync speed is not far off the right kind of figure for your attenuation, which suggests that your internal telephone wiring doesn't have any major faults, though if you were to describe how you've got things set up, it might help to identify places where it could be improved.

If you've got a V1 router (the white one) then you should see an improvement when the new firmware is finally rolled out. Until then, you can use the Mognuts utility page to increase your target noise margin a bit. This will give you a slower, but more reliable connection.

Thanks for the repsonse. I'll try upping the target noice margin a bit (would 10dB be about the right amount to try?)

With regard to my own internal setup I do use an extension cable on between the router and the phone socket, but this the layout of the room is such that this is pretty much unavoidable and I haven't had any problems back when I was with Orange (non-LLU). Other than that I have two wired computers and a laptop on wireless, if that helps.

Do you mean you have a telephone extension cable running between the phone socket and where your router is, then a microfilter, and then the router?

Plug-in telephone extension cables are usually less than ideal for ADSL because they will typically have four wires, two for the signal, one unused, and one acting as a very long aerial for picking up interference. Plugging the microfilter into the phone socket and then using a long router cable (a cable with small RJ11 connectors at both ends - like the one that you're using now to connect the router to the microfilter, but longer) will probably be better than using a plug-in telephone extension.

But there's even better options, if you fancy doing a little bit of (fairly simple) DIY with your telephone wiring.
