Netgear router with a cable modem

      Hi there,

I currently have a Virgin cable connection, and my old Sky router.

Can I plug the Ethernet RJ45 cable from my Virgin cable modem into my old Netgear Sky router and use it for multiple internet connections and file sharing between PCs?

Iíve flashed the modem and plugged it and 2 PCs into the sky router, but only one PC gets an internet IP, and the other gets a private 192 address, which canít see the internet. The 2 PCs canít see each other, unless the modem is removed and the 2 PCs receive private addresses.

      Any suggestions would be appreciated.

      Thanks

No you can't get something like that working. The Ethernet ports on the Sky Router are connected to a switch on the "private" side of the network address translation (NAT) system in the Sky Router. You need to plug the modem into the "public" side of the NAT system and there's no way to do that with the Sky Router. No way whatsoever I'm afraid.

You need to get yourself a router that is "designed for cable". This will be similar to an ADSL router, except that instead of having four Ethernet ports and an ADSL telephone connection port, it'll have five Ethernet ports, one of which will be labelled "modem" or something like that. That port will be on the "public" side of the NAT system.

To add to James' excellent post one of the ports may be labelled WAN (wide area network -- i.e. the internet) the remaining ethernet sockets may be labelled LAN (as in local). I did an install for a friend this week connecting his new Virgin modem to an ancient Zoom cable-compatible wireless router.

To improve wireless speed he'll eventually upgrade to a newer design so we had a look on e-bay -- there are plenty there but prices seem significantly higher than for ADSL models.

I bought one of these on eBay to connect my son's VM service and it works fine.
