      Unable to surf whilst downloading

      Hi,

Just got my router and got online ok. We're running 2 machines (desktop plugged directly into the router and a wireless laptop). If either of us try and download something (through a bitorrent program, or Blizzard downloader) we are unable to surf the net - we are getting a connection time out error.

      Completely stumped.

      Any ideas?

      Thanks,

      Deyna

have you checked that both computers are not the same ip address (in your LAN connection)?
if both have the same then i think only 1 will connect

(not 100% sure about the above as i only have 1 computer myself)

You don't say what speed your connection is. If it is slow to begin with, sucking bandwidth with a P2P connection will grind it to a halt. Remember that when you are using these you are uploading at the same time as you are downloading. What is your normal connection speed? You may have to reduce your P2P connections if you want to browse at the same time, especially with 2 PCs.

Note - When downloading always select the Custom install or you will end up with stuff you don't want.

You could also use a traffic shaping utility like Cfos. This prioritises your bandwidth use so that the priority is with the browser when you are downloading. I've used it for ages and find it works very efficiently.

We can have up to 4 users on at any one time and you fire up P2P and it could take the lot. I use azureus and just limit my downloads to 100kb and then nobody else notices.

If it's during the night I just let it run but a small word of warning if you use moseywells bounce, turn it off before cranking p2p up as it will cause slow responses and then the app reboots the router.
Post Sky DLM and after some cowboy contracters and BT ruined my line quality (was 6mb pre DLM):
