      Re: Wireless With No Security?

hi, I've just come across this site and it's advice has helped me setup internet access for my sons Wii. I have wireless access left on all the time, should I be setting some kind of security up to prevent people access what I'm doing, e.g bank details??

Yes definately. You should use WPA2 or WPA Personal using a strong passphrase consisting of random characters (don't use dictionary words).

MAC filtering doesn't really add much as its trivial to spoof a mac address.

hiding the SSID is pointless as everyone can still see the network and all its traffic.

Setting up Wireless security alone is not going to protect you, all it will do is stop others using your Broadband connection for free and possibly entering your network. You really need properly layered security, with the minimum of a 3rd party firewall, an up to date Anti virus program and a malicious software prevention/detection program.

Although the OP is quite happy to do it, leaving your wireless point open is not really a good idea. Apart from what has been mentioned, allowing an outsider access to your router is allowing him/her past your first line of defence against hackers, which is your router firewall.
