The V1 router, will still have the same username and password

So those who are using their own should be fine.

What we don't know is if Sky will use this opportunity to suspend accounts, IE for those that do not call home for the updated FW.

That would be a pretty bizarre commercial decision - at least for those customers out of contract.

Re: Router flashing not against T&c's?

I agree, it would seem a bit pointless to suspend people unless they were causing a specific problem. But I can imagine that after the new firmware is released, the very first question customer support will ask is what firmware version number is shown on the router status page. Anything other than the correct number and they'll say, "Your router needs to be updated. Switch your router off for 30 seconds and then switch it back on. Wait 30 minutes to allow the router to update. If you continue to have problems after that, please call back."

So you'll be stuck in a customer support "script loop" if you're using anything other than the old Sky software or the new Sky software.

But in all honesty, why not just let the router upgrade? No standard Netgear software will ever have received as much specifically targeted testing as the new Sky software will have had. Most likely, Netgear will have half a dozen DSLAMS in their test rooms, with, say, three wire paths, one short, one medium length and one long, and they test their software on each combination. Sky have been testing their software with real users connected with real BT phone lines to specifically Alcatel and Globespan DSLAMS that have been configured as BT and Sky (respectively) configure them.

Sky's new software will have the potential to be, and in fact should be, more reliable than the standard Netgear software.

I agree, and I'll certainly be giving it a go once it is released.

Indeed James, but you know as well as I do that some will still refer to the Netgear as crappy and will want to use something else instead. My own view is that if you want to enjoy the very low cost of using Sky and reasonable equipment is being supplied, you should use it. If you want to use what you want, go to an ISP who allows it and pay 4-5 times as much as you are now. No doubt some will say they would rather pay more for a 100% reliable connection, if so, why are they here?

Re: Router flashing not against T&c's?

That is true, but the Sky firmware for the Netgear router is flawed and they have had a very very long time to rectify it.

One of the reasons that people want to change the router, or alter the firmware is that some of the obvious bugs should have been dealt with months ago have not been fixed. With the current sky firmware on it the netgear router really is a bit "crappy".

People don't expect to have a service that is markedly better than any other BB service, they just expect one that is at least as good as the current market. I think Sky are achieving that largely, but so many of their support problems could have been solved by getting out a better firmware, and fixing their woeful email service.
