Question Wake On Lan with sky DG834GT

Ok, so I need to be able to access a pc at home from multiple locations but without leaving it left on (what a waste of electricity). I've been reading through the site, but theres a few things I need clearing up,

      A) Can I configure WOL on my router with sky firmware
      B) Will I need to flash my router and upgrade to latest NTGR firmware?
      C) If possible will it work from the internet aswell as internally?
      D) Anyone else here thats got this working and want to share tips on setting it up?

Thanks if anyone can clear this up for me. Great forum you guys run!

I've never actually tried it myself, but I reckon this should be possible. You won't need to upgrade the router firmware (which is against Sky's T&C's anyway), just set up port forwarding for port 9 (the "discard" service that WOL uses) if you want to switch your PC on from outside. Note that there's no authentication mechanism for WOL, so basically anyone on the Internet would be able to switch your PC on.

Re: Wake On Lan with sky DG834GT

Thank you for reply, thats great , will i need a mac and ip to turn it on from the internet? as i think internally you can just use a mac? or is it a mac and a local ip, with the internet mite just be mac and public ip? or just ip??

Any WOL programs that anyone would recommend?

Re: Wake On Lan with sky DG834GT

Well, programs that issue wake-on-lan requests typically use an Ethernet MAC address and use the broadcast IP address. A program that does that, won't work across the Internet. You'll need something that can send a wake-on-lan request to a specific IP address, although it'll still need to have the MAC address of the PC. Remember, it's your public IP address you need to use, not the private IP address that's allocated to the PC on your home network - the router forwards the request which is why you have to set up port forwarding.

I use a perl script which I found on the Internet that seems to do the job, but I inhabit a world of UNIX and Linux machines where that makes sense. There's quite a few programs listed for Windows in this Wikipedia article: Wake-on-LAN - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Re: Wake On Lan with sky DG834GT

I don't know if this of any help, but I flashed my router with the UberGT firmware the other day, and it has added in a menu option to send a WOL to an internal IP and Mac address.

If you turned on remote management (also activated by the UberGT firmware) you would be able to log on to the router from the office and send the WOL over the internal network.

You can limit the machines allowed to remotely manage you router by IP address.
