Router drops connection frequently in evenings

Every evening, usually between the hours of 6-11, my router keeps dropping connection to the adsl line. Occasionally, it will just be the adsl connection lagging or disconnection, or a full blown router modem diconnect from the line, requiring the router to re-establish a connection to the line (amber flashing adsl line connection light). This does not happen during the day, only the evenings.

So why is this? Ive flashed my router's firmware to proper netgear firmware, in order to aid this problem, because on the sky firmware my router would freeze when the line was dropped requiring a reboot. This usually happened once or twice a night. Now with the netgear firmware it redials itself but seems to be dropping connection more frequently per night.

I've plugged the router into the main BT socket directly but no difference. It usually only stays on for 20 minutes, although its been on for around 40 now.

The constant disconnects are becoming a real pain and its been like this ever since I got sky broadband in march. It makes online gaming virtually impossible.

PLEASE help me, I have absolutely no idea what's going on!!

      Any help is greatly appreciated,
      Thanks.

Probably a falling noise margin. Please see the first sticky in my signature for info.

I just checked the noise margin, it was 1.3db and then just at that moment the router disconnected, so that might be the problem. So I read your sticky, rebooted router, and now it should stay connected if I keep the router on all the time, because its tuned to evening noise yes? Thanks for the very quick reply by the way.

      LOL, might be? No question

Yes, either of the methods described in my sticky will "lock" the router to a high enough margin to avoid disconnects. Mognuts is the easiest method.

Of concern though is why your noise margin is dropping so much. A drop of a couple of db is normal. A drop of 5+db suggests a line problem. See the cabling and faceplate help forum for info on diagnosing and fixing line problems. You haven't posted your stats but I suspect you have other problems such as a low sync speed.

Not quite sure how to posts stats - I've seen users post lots of stats but I don't know how to get them.

Thanks so much for the replies, I hope this brings me one step closer to solving the problems. If this forum had a reputation system, then REP++!
