Red face Unable to recover router after firmware update failure

      Hi all
I'm new here and am very impressed by the site, Thank you!

I have just made the mistake of trying to flash my DG834GT to the latest Netgear firmware using my vista pc. It BSOD'ed mid-upgrade!!
The router is now stuck in firmware upgrade mode (flashing power and tick LED's)
When I run the recovery utility (on an XP box this time ) it can now not see the router.
I have tried setting my PC's IP address to static 192.168.0.2, but it will just not find the damn things MAC addy.

Has anyone else had this experience? If so, did you manage to fix it?

      Cheers in advance!

Re: Unable to recover router after firmware update failure

I understand that, but if you re-read the post, you will note that I am now using my XP pc to attempt to recover the router. It does not see the router at all now.

      regards

Re: Unable to recover router after firmware update failure

You may well be stuck but before you give up, power off and unplug the router, then leave it for at least a couple of hours, maybe overnight so that all capacitors etc have discharged.

Then start from scratch: push a pen tip in the reset button hole and plug the power back in, releasing the pen/button a few seconds later.

Next run rmdrv.exe, then run UpgradeWizard.exe (ensuring the new firmware image is in the same folder) and follow the prompts.

I'm reliably informed that this "sometimes" works for otherwise apparently broken routers.

      Good luck.

Re: Unable to recover router after firmware update failure

I am guessing at the moment, but I think the problem is with the NIC in the PC. For some reason, certain NICs cannot see the router when it is in 'flash mode'. It is however, well known that Vista cannot be used, no matter what card you have. This is mentioned several times in the forum pages and the Netgear site states that it has only been tested on XP and Win2000.

Re: Unable to recover router after firmware update failure

Phone Sky ASAP and get them to send you a new box - I had this problem and after some testing, they could not offer a fix and had to send out a new router...and I tried on a Win2K and XP box.

      Thanks

Re: Unable to recover router after firmware update failure

Good luck with that, any sign that you have tampered with the box and you will not get a box sent out. If you even mention the slightest hint that you have tried upgrading the firmware you will be put through to CS and they will be told you have tampered with the unit.
Try holding the reset in for 10 seconds to force a hard reset. If that fails then when you call up DO NOT mention firmware and then hope when it goes back that whoever looks at it does not report it back to Sky as you will be in trouble.
