      Re: Sky Router Firmware Upgrade

The new FW is being beta tested now, providing it passes all the problems that it is supposed to fix, asap I would say. As in before Christmas at a guess.

Is there any information on which faults this new release is intended to fix? In particular, will it include Broadcom's latest ADSL driver code?

      Re: Sky Router Firmware Upgrade

Great news if it fixes my line drop problem. Thank god for Mognuts utility. But I still have to use that 3 times a day. I hope they fix the auto line speed negotiation for adsl2+ it is the biggest bugbear that I see on several peoples connections . I get called to fix loads of peoples comps and internet connection probs and I see this one frequently on sky. Hope its soon. Where will we find out? I presume we wil have to download it and update? I have changed the admin password on the router for security so sky would not be able to do aremote install.

No the remote upgrade will still work if you change the password. Sky don't connect to the router to do the upgrade, the router connects to Sky to do it.

^ my belief is Sky rolls it out remotely to the router - hence them saying the have the right to update the router when they see fit...otherwise having it as an optional upgrade would defeat the point of only being able to use the Netgear router...

      might be wrong though...

      Company confidential I would assume.

We do know that UPnP and MSN are fixed.

From the grapevine, the FW was going to be optional. Now it is going to be mandatory (unconfirmed). It is unclear as to whether or not Sky will suspend accounts of those customers that do not get the FW upgraded. I personnally do not believe they will, however, that is my own feelings and not an official or confirmed theory.

The router phones home to the exchange afaik 2 to 3 times a day. Once a new FW is present on the servers in the exchange it will automatically upgrade the router.

There is a picture of the update in progress in the other thread.

afaik that was a Netgear V2 in progress.

There's a little program running on the Sky router (but not on the standard Netgear firmware) called provisioning_ap which periodically tries to contact a server called dg834gt.skyfirmware.com. The customer doesn't have to start it or anything like that, it just sits there quietly in the background from the moment you switch the router on. If provisioning_ap manages to contact that server and it sees it has a new version of the firmware, it downloads it and writes it into the flash memory.

If you put the standard firmware into your Sky router, or if you use a different router, then there won't be a little program trying to contact Sky, and from that, theoretically, could let Sky work out that you've broken the T&C's.
