There is nothing to stop you trying. If the router details have not been removed from the system and it has not been flashed, it should work OK.
I am amazed at the number of 'spare' Sky routers that seem to be around, all of which I assume, were judged to be 'faulty'

The router and packaging is still sealed.
      So this should be OK?

Yup! provided the details are in the system, it should work.

Re: Can I use a friends sky router before mine arrives?

Not too sure if that will work. It would be foolish of Sky to send out usernames and passwords for their system (within their routers) and not have any accountability against who is accessing (e.g. customer record) their own systems with a particular username/password. I suspect that the spare router will not work, as it will not have been enabled on the system and has probably been dis-associated from the customer.

      &

Even if they do have accountability, they have the power to enable/disable usernames.

To be honest, 3-5 days isn't that long. My router back in November took 2 weeks to arrive and then a seperate 3 days for Sky to activate it's username/password.

As previously said you have nothing to lose, however my gut feeling is that it could be a complete waste of time.

Past posts have indicated that your suspicions are wrong! Several users have found that when they received a replacement router, it was/is still possible to connect with the old one. Several have also reported that it is possible to connect with their router to a friend's connection.
