Re: Ditch your sky router today !!!

Sorry, but as I understand it, if the exchange has not been unbundled by Sky, then you cannot be on MAX. Maybe Sky are not now informing users that they can't have MAX and just put them on connect without telling them. It would not surprise me in the least!

You could try doing a speed test on THIS site, you will have to put in your phone number and then your username (the secret one from the router). If the test works, you are on Connect, if it doesn't, you may still be on Connect, keep trying a few more times as it often fails. This is the most accurate speed test for Connect users. Sky LLU users will always get a fail on this site.

Cheers for the input Isitme, after a bit of searching today i've found that chester-le-street was llu enabled on 12/06. BT say that my line's max capacity is 5.5mb, have you any ideas what i can do to get more bandwith, since i am on the sky max package ?

You could post your detailed stats and you will get some advice on what you can do to improve your connection. I would advise starting another thread for this, as posting in this one will only cause confusion. I could not find chester-le-street in the exchange listings, does it have another name?

Frankly ignore what BT says as their systems are still only set up for adsl1 and my line was only capable of that apparently and yet I got the full 8 meg/sec when I was in BT and now I get 10-12 meg/sec from Sky.

What speed is your modem synching at (in the router status page?) anything over 8meg/sec and your on adsl2+ if it's capped at 8 meg/sec you may be on the other system. getting detailed stats will get that information as well.

You can do a check on the SkyUser Checker which is more accurate than many

The above test says i should be able to get between 12 & 14 mb.
When the migration firt took place i had a downstream of 13000+ kbps but had a lot of problems with drop out. Now its 7238kbps, have i been capped ????
      Thanks again Isitme

Re: Ditch your sky router today !!!

Sky has me on g.dmt, but ive notice an alarming stat last night. With the DG834gt my ds snr is 12 and my att is 30. With the DG834g may ds snr is 3 and my att is 32. Considering i live 900m's from the exchange (I can see it from my garden), i must have a line fault. I have the old type socket without the internal test socket. I live in a rented house so im unsure if i should get a new line installed. Has anybody got a clue how much it costs ??

Whilst a very bad line will cause the attenuation to rise for it to cause the sort of rise you're implying the line would have to be so bad that I doubt you'd even get an ADSL connection.

Your stats show that your line probably could be improved as your attenuation should be supporting a higher sync than it is but if/when you do this don't expect the attenuation to rise by more than a couple of db or so. See the cabling and faceplate help forum for info on diagnosing and fixing line problems before you spend time/money with BT. The BT line is probably not the problem.

Back to the attenuation, you may only live 900m as the crow flies from the exchange but lines rarely follow straight lines unless you happen to be on a straight road with the exchange at the other end. Even then the line may follow another route. For whatever reason, your line is ~2km long.

Do you have any extensions off the master socket ? If you have, it might be worth disconnecting them, if you can, because bad extension wiring can knock your noise margin for six. Your noise margin is very poor for a line with only 30dB attenuation. BT will come out and replace your old socket, and I think they have a special price for doing it. Contact BT sales.
